Thanks for all the info, very helpful!! I was kind of just staring at it, thinking there was nothing obviously wrong... I'm sure it's had a clockspring already, so didn't expect that to be at fault.
Put it back together and the radio buttons work, hope the cruise control ones do too, but have to wait and see...!?

If you look at this picture:

You can clearly see the white cable has sheared off, it went to the left of the green wire. I think it came away when I removed the multiplug but that was why my steering wheel switch illumination kept flickering.
At the other end of the multiplug you can see I have extended the brown wire with a short red piece at the right hand end, that was to rectify the cruise control. Thumbs Up

Thank you for that! That helps me, as I couldn't see any damage to the wiring, but didn't really look too hard at where the wise went into the plug...
Interesting you mentioned your switches illuminate, I don't think mine do? I'll have another look later... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Well, just got home, the switches work the volume and change the track / radio and they now also light up!! Just got to take it out and see if the cruise control works! Very Happy Very Happy Well chuffed! (Yes, I know little things please little minds and all that!) Rolling Eyes
I fully appreciate that all I've done is unplug and plug back in, so there's every chance it'll pack up again sometime soon, but while it's working this much, I'll leave it alone... Wink
Thanks for all your help guys! Thumbs Up

It's always worth checking the little loom first as it's a simple repair and costs are minimal whereas replacing an expensive clockspring, only to discover the little loom was half unplugged after you've spent a shed load of cash, would be somewhat deflating. Rolling Eyes

Nice result. Thumbs Up

Ok, partial result. The cruise control still isn't working. Not fussed, now I know A how easy it is to get the airbag out and B the most likely fault to look out for, it puts my mind at rest that's it's not likely to be the clockspring, plus, I'm guessing a new loom can't cost mega bucks if it's beyond repair?! (Or, at least, beyond my limited soldering "skills!!")

Thanks again!

Check the brown wire in the white multiplug very closely if your cruise is playing up, you may find it's hanging on by very little. Wink

Cruise control activation Cambridge area

Hello all

Does anyone know of someone local to Cambridge who could activate my shiny new cruise control switches.

I would have PM'd some of the members who've offered their services previously in this thread however I cant until I've posted 3 times. That's 1.

Cheers

Neil

Hi All,

I'm having the same intermittent cruise control experienced here and whilst I have a 6 month RAC warranty with the car I'd much rather have a go at resolving if it's just a case of a dodgy wire.
If I can at least check the wiring myself then I'll be happy, then hand over to RAC warranty if it's looking like a clock spring.

My question to DiscoStoo or Narpy is around the removal of the airbag - can I definitely remove it using a removal tool whilst the battery is still connected? I'd much rather do this than disconnect the battery but just want to check this is definitely a safe approach!

With regard to the wiring - presumably there is very little play to work with and I'll have to extend the cable rather than being able to pull extra slack through?

cheers

I took mine off, (using an "engineered" bungee strap hook!) I took it off and nothing went bang! Although, in past experience of taking a Ford one off, I was told to disconnect the battery, leave it ten mins and consider using anti static wristbands....

Sometimes, resolving this problem is as simple as ensuring that the loom plugs are correctly seated in the back of the switch pack. Just press the connector back into the cruise switch pack.

First and cheapest thing to try first. Thumbs Up

Yes indeed, I was an electrician for a good number of years so the techy side of things I'm ok with - I just don't want to blow myself up with the airbag! Exclamation Exclamation

I'd rather do it without disconnecting the battery as I'm always concerned things don't start back up correctly, so just want to make sure this is a safe and agreed process folks Mr. Green
