AutoGlass Screen Replaced Today - Pleasantly Surprised

Thinking back to previous posts about non-LR glass being installed.

So nice man from AutoGlass turns up today to change my windscreen.

Screen is genuine Pilkington because it is labelled as such (not necessarily LR though)?

It has all the toys for headlight control, auto high beam, wiper control, VIN number aperture in the right place, heated etc.

I asked if he had clips for A-pillar trim? Reply "I have two new A-pillars complete with new clips as they have changed the size and old clips do not fit very well". I did check with my spare clips I have on-board and the wobble in the fitting so maybe they have changed. Who knows - not me.

Anyway, one hour later new screen, not a mark inside or outside, new A-pillars covers – job done.

A very nice man. My faith is restored in AutoGlass Smile

Autoglass fitters are great
Last one that came round to our house filled my wife's crack with his special resin

Mine is finally being replaced this Friday. Hopefully. It won't be, though, if they turn up with a non-OEM screen. Fingers crossed.

Must get mine organised before the colder weather sets in - going to be nice having a screen that defrosts in its entirety, not just in stripes Laughing

Well my new Genuine screen lasted all of 7 weeks! Arrrgghhhh.....

Still my insurer Axa were excellent...chap read out internal advice about the problems customers were facing dealing with Autoglass and instantly authorised another new screen to be fitted by Auto Windscreens....no problems at all....he stated it has been a horrendous 6 months with huge numbers of complaints! He told me of a customer who had just complained saying he had been without his car for 3 months whilst waiting for Autoglass!

So another new screen being ordered from the dealers!

I wanted to upgrade my standard screen to a heated version with sensors. Phoned Autoglass for a quote. After having to explain that this was an upgrade and not a replacement he disappeared to make enquiries. He came back to state that I would have to take the vehicle into a Land Rover dealership in order to verify that the wiring was in place before they could fit it. I told them the wiring was in place. Then put on hold again while he went to check price. Came back with a price of £721.56 fitted. I asked if this was for a genuine LR screen or a pattern part. He couldn't tell me. I just laughed and told him that a genuine LR screen has a retail of £466.00 plus VAT and that I can get one at 15% off retail. So genuine screen supplied by LR at £475 including VAT. Local glass fitter will install for £75. Total £550. My conclusion - Shop around.
Independent glass company are trying to source a Pilkington Screen to see if it is cheaper than LR part.
I know it's a different situation going through your Insurance - but I think Autoglass are trying to make up the money they lose from insurance work by overcharging the people who have to pay!

Beginning to wonder if it's worth asking the insurance company if they are prepared to offer a policy without screen cover, I've had two screens in the last fifteen years of Land Rover ownership, with the hassle of dealing with the insurance company and the likes of Autoglass, might be as well to have a free hand and go to who ever you want Question

I just don't bother claiming for glass. You need to declare it when you're shopping around for insurance quotes, and it's just one more bit of admin I can't be bothered with.

You do need to source carefully though, I admit.

I don't agree. Most insurers I've dealt with during renewals don't include glass claims, so you wouldn't need to mention it.

Well, they called to cancel after I'd taken half a day off work. Tossers. Now rebooked.
