Paint Defect in Brand new Disco....? |
|
Had car a few weeks now (MY16 HSE) .... and the other day noticed a slight paint defect in the drivers door...... tried taking photo and it hasn't really shown it so will have another go..... but to describe... its a slightly 'mottled' ... almost but not quite a paint 'run' as it were - about 2 inches long and horizontal just over รยผ inch wide I would say......
Now I'm trying to decide whether to 'live' with it ..... as its only really noticeable if you peer at it closely in a certain light...
Its not the sort of mark that will 'polish out' I don't think, as it does look to be the paint and not the top coat 'lacquer' and I'm not keen on getting LR involved too much ..... they will probably make it worse (they've still got the dent they put in the same door to fix - which I've insisted on being a 'paintless repair') and I'm certainly not keen on getting the whole panel resprayed.... they rarely look right again in my experience.
I've had brand new cars before .... and invariably find some paint blemish somewhere..... so maybe I am expecting too much and shouldn't expect the paintwork to be faultless all over ..... but this is the most I've ever spent on a car !!
Anyone had similar and 'lived' with it? 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

I wonder if it's one of those things that can be put down to the joys of trying to get a decent and consistent overall finish with modern, water based, paints? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

To be honest I don't know why you are even asking here, I would be straight back to get it sorted. If you have seen it then a buyer whenever that is may see it and knock you down on second hand value, and it may of course get worse Joined the BMWX5 45e group

How its 'sorted' is the issue... LR aren't going to send it back to the factory for paint repair, they haven't got their own bodyshop, they are not going to get a new door - so ... off to the local bodyshop
In my experience, if the re spray does not show itself as a re spray straight away it certainly will in a few months/years time... usually by going dull first ... 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

How big the actual defect is....
Lots of body shops now use smart repairs as opposed to complete panel re sprays.
But they are paying to get it to your satisfaction
It's got to be clear kote lacquered so shouldn't dull out
Above all you are in the driving seat as to what happens you decide when it's satisfactory....
Paint defects don't heal up...you see them everyday.....others do too.

As long as it's carried out in a JLR certified paintshop you should have the repair done to an exacting standard and your warranty will remain intact ....don't settle for less. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Definitely wouldn't be the case if it's a decent bodyshop - I had a panel repair when the vehicle (not this current one) was only 6 weeks old, tore through the skin Sold it 5+ years later and you still couldn't see where the repair was - it was white too, a difficult colour to match properly.

Trust me after my recent issues, TAKE IT BACK
Get the dealer to look into it and if necessary raise the fault with Landrover.
I loved my D4 but LR only offered to paint the problem panels even though two reports stated the entire car needed a full re paint
After going through all the legal channels i learnt that if my car had been less than 12 months old they would have given me a brand new replacement no questions asked but it was 16 months old and even though the reports stated it was a factory paint fault they wouldnt do anything.

Yep I would take it back. Mate at work had trouble with a new golf recently paint had a wierd mottle effect at certain angles on roof and rear pillars. VW replaced it with a brand new one, that's how it should be!
get your dealer to take a look to start with.

Why does it take only a small number of posts before a genuine enquiry about a minor paint defect brings calls for outright rejection and replacement?
I can understand why dealers and manufacturers can get defensive instead of helpful. Let's try and suggest a proportionate response 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

Thanks for your responses chaps ..... I've tried again to take a photo showing the defect with no joy .... it just will not show up on a photo .... by me anyway... which demonstrates, I suppose, how minor the blemish is. It took three weeks or more for me to spot it only because I happened to be looking down the line of the car and in a certain light I saw it .... now I look at it every day of course.... (along with the dent)
I shall point it out to the dealership when it goes in for the dent and other issues next week and see what they say..... but, my departing Land Cruiser, after 5 years had bramble rash, numerous stone chips and small dings here and there - and thats despite a lot of care on my part .... being into 'detailing' to a modest extent.
This car will obviously get the same or worse..... now living down here in Cornwall 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black
