I purchased a set of pattern discs and pads for the front of my old d2 van. I thought I was buying trouble but for £40 and an hours work what did I have to loose. Towed 3.5 tonnes most of the time for 20,000 miles before selling. Never had any problems no squeals no steering shakes no brake fade. The only thing I noticed is they were more inclined to corrode if left out the garage for a few days. But if used regular the corrosion never eat into the disc.D4

Looks like you need the services of someone like disco Mikey he has just replaced the discs and pads all round for a lot less than that.
Last time I had discs and pads done at a main dealer on a Range Rover it had to go back three times to get it right. £900 for squeaky brakes!!

D4 discs (70 quid each genuine) arent much different to D3 front disc prices, its the front pads that are a rip off from LR - 135quid a set compared to 60odd ish on the D3.

Thanks for the relplies,
and for the offers of assistance.....
its due its service in Oct / Nov so I'll leave it until then, or until the wear sensors tell me something different
For me, its just the usual main dealer job creation, to justify the cost of giving it a quick wash.
Interestingly, I've been getting an intermittent "reduced performance" fault message....their clever computer didn't pick THAT up, although when I picked it up they did tell me....

Dave - seeing the 'diagnostic' charge quoted I'm guessing that'll be a certain dealer down on the Liverpool waterfront....??
They've tried that gag with me many a time....
I often wonder if, when we walk in there an (invisible to us) handle is sticking to the side of our heads - they certainly think we're mugs.....
The offer of borrowing tools applies any time - and if you just need muscle to undo stubborn bits I'll send the wee lad over to supply the grunt I see no ships........

Well they just sent me a very video sexy link of the technician checking the depth of the pads.

REALLY???
£1016 to change the brake pads
What is the going rate to change pads?????
Isn't it interesting how different dealers appear to have different approaches to servicing and tricks to persuade us to spend more, attitudes towards customers and efforts to retain customers? My 2009 D4 with 51K recently decided it was time for service no. 6 (90K - a big one) Got an Indy quote at £460 and Lancaster Thatcham LR Service centre at £560. Prefering to maintain the full LRSH (and having an LR dealer to shout at if anything is wrong) I opted for Lancaster. They said they would do a full health check. Great! If anything needed doing the would call me first. Nice! Got there, and it is indeed 'just a service centre' no trendy salesmen and evidence of all the bling my money was going to help fund - just... Service. I did say that if brake fluid needed changing just to do it.
They called me several hours later to say all was done. D4 was healthy.
Got there and was told that the pads had 30-40% life left and probably wouldn't make next service. If I was handy, it wouldn't be hard to do myself....???!!! Then I was told - Brake Fluid was a bit dirty and could do with a change.
I was about to start..... then the Lancaster man said - ahhh, you said we should do it didn't you? That's entrirely my fault sir. I am most sorry. Please accept a £120 discount for my error. So genuine LR service ended up £20 cheaper than the indy.
Now in France, the local indy can do pads (Brembo, Ate or Bosch) and fluid for around €230 all in - mind you... I did give him my 94 Disco 3.9 ES a couple of years ago - both sunroofs packed in and not worth registering in France as 3.9 was never homologated.
OK, Lancaster Thatcham didn't do all I asked, but they were totally fair and 'un-grabby'. They also did the towbar recall - not that it was required as my D4 has never had one fitted. I highly recommend them!
BTW, which pads should I choose - what is OEM fit?

That's nice, my dealer wanted £800 just for the front discs and pads, something like £500 for the disks and £300 for the pads. Wouldn't shift on price.
Got them done at the commercial tyre centre round the corner for £300Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

With the MOT due the end of next month, front pads were down to 4mm, so with a bit of help from the posts on here, the purchase of a set of Genuine Pads, full kit, sealed, in the box, purchased off EBay for £30 all fitted this morning in 90 minutes.

Re: Brake Pads - £1000 to change!!!
No sexiness needed
Just shine a bright torch occasionally at each of your calipers in between your alloy wheel spokes, and you will be able to see the thickness of the pad as well as the pad backing metal (just about)
Takes about 20 seconds per wheel
At the same time you can check your own tread depths with a £1.99 tread depth tool, which takes another 20 seconds per wheel...
No need to measure to the exact mm.... when the pad thickness is approx the same or slightly less than the backing plate, then just change them...
I use Pagid pads which is about £25 per pair (front) and £25 per pair (rear) + cost of fitting
I find Pagid brake nicely, do not squeal, and do not wear as fast as the original Land Rover pads
Best wishes

I have just changed mine at 37K miles, no way would the discs last two sets of pads. For the D3 owners, D4 discs and pads are way more than D3 for OEM ones, certainly not £350 as quoted above for OEM.

Lets hope your service isn't the same as the one I was just quoted for at £435 for just the oil and filter change! "We do a free health check Sir." Really, but I only want the oil change, came my reply. "Well we may be able to do it for £400, but its on the ramp for 2 hours..."
WRT the intermittent Restricted Performance, brace yourself for a cracked inlet manifold - been there and done that one... The replacement is yours for the bargain price of £1440 You have options though as the genuine inlet manifold is only £160, so you can then take it to an indy or, if competent, replace it yourself. Beware, however, it is 7-8 hrs work and you may lose some wrist skin in the process.D4 2012 Orkney Grey SDV6 GS 8 Speed - Awesome
