With a copy of Bodsy's brake bible to hand, anyone with the slightest mechanical knowledge should be able to do all 4 corners including the EPB shoes in a day comfortably. All parts OEM including discs no more than £350. Go on, you wont know how easy it is until you try. and you'll be safe in the knowledge that its been done properly. Joined Aug 2014. It means that the discs do not need replacing yet. The real question, though, is will the discs last another set of pads? The relevance of this is how long you intend to keep the car as if you change just the pads, you may need to bin everything and start again part way through the pad life. 2014MY Discovery

Dave - there will be a minimum thickness marked on the disc itself (or you can probably Google it) - just grab yourself a set of Verniers or digital micrometer and measure away.
If you haven't got a set or can't borrow one for work let me know and you can borrow mine.
I know my driving style is a la Miss Daisy now but I normally get two sets of pads to one disc. I see no ships........

Sounds like usual dealer rip off, front pads with 5mm are only a little more than half worn!, slight lip on disc, well they'll all get a lip as they wear, it's the dealers way of trying to scare you.
I'd ask them to leave it as is, and when you get the pad warning then replace the pads and disc thickness can be checked then
FWIW I'd be happy to change the pads and check the disc thickness for you it's convenient for you to come to Newbury area or use one of the recognised (and brilliant) specialists on here, i.e. Geoff., Bodsy, Disco mikey etc etc Mark

About 3 years ago I had a similar report from a local LR dealer which said that I needed new disks & pads all round, and numerous front suspension bushes.
I thought that the disks & pads had lots of life in them, and said so. The response was that with 12 months or 15k miles between services they had to recommend replacement of items which might need attention within 12 months or 15k miles.
I decided to buy the parts, through Advanced Factors, and carried them until they needed to be fitted. Overkill I accept, but in this time I did a 4k mid-winter round trip to Greece etc..
IIRC I did another c. 18 months & 20k miles before getting an indy (West 4x4) to replace the disks & pad, and even then there was some life left in them.
I have yet to change the suspension bushes, most recent MoT April this year, most recent service August this year!
Find & rely on the advice from a good Indy.

How much life are people getting from a set of pads and discs? I understand it's somewhat variable depending on type of use, but dealer is telling me 20,000 is "good" for a full set of pads and discs....really?

I have just changed mine at 37K miles, no way would the discs last two sets of pads. For the D3 owners, D4 discs and pads are way more than D3 for OEM ones, certainly not £350 as quoted above for OEM. Joined the BMWX5 45e group
