Wheel bearing? Diff? Or gearbox? |
|
Hello
Just after some advice from the knowledge bank please.
My disco 3 has started to make a "whining noise" it can be heard slightly when driving and I'm convinced I can feel vibration on the left side when I'm not driving and in the passenger side, took it to the garage I've always used as they are quite good. Mech took it for a drive and also heard the noise but couldn't pin point where it was coming from! There is a slight whine when driving normally but when you take your foot off the pedal the noise is more noticeable on the engine run down.
My question is, what could it be? My mechanic has suggested that I keep running it for the time being to see if the problem progresses as due to the cost of parts he doesn't want to just start changing things! He has said that when I take it in for its service in just less than 2000 miles he will investigate further but my worry is that this might lead to more problems.
My disco drives perfectly other than the annoying noise and the gear change seems normal but still worry that it may be the gearbox ( it's a manual box by the way )
So if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful for any help on this.
Thanks in advance

As Mike says.....mine was confirmed by putting it in off-road height, low range, and reversing slowly on full lock....the outside wheel was skipping across the Tarmac....it was badly gone by that point, but might be worth trying to confirm "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Well cheers for the input guys, went to the local supermarket car park last night to try it out and there is a slight skip on the outside wheel, so my next question is best place to get a diff?

City Gearboxes
Trouble is finding them though. Currently on back order, even core units.
You may find it easier to remove your diff, and send it away for a rebuild My D3 Build Thread

I know who you are talking about. Have a customer who is friends with someone in charge at said dealership, and even at "mates rates" he still couldn't match my price for timing belts
Have you tried City Gearboxes yet? My D3 Build Thread
