Sweet cheers for that, I take it that if changing the diff it's just a case of take the old one off and fit the new one and job done?

The land rover ones are refurbed anyway so may as well source your own. The other give away is if you drop the oil out of yours it will be full of swarf. I think my land rover one was around £900 D4

Not too bad to change, just a bit of spanner work
You can buy the bearings/seal kit and overhaul yourself if just the bearings
Can get a second hand one from the scrap yard network for circa £350 with a couple of months warranty
I would try changing the oil first and check for debris on the drain plug and check you have the new type breather
Make sure you get the right ratio for your manual, which obviously makes them harder to come by There is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance

Yeah changed the oil last night but made no difference, there was some small metal deposits on the plug when we took it out but it didn't look overly bad, I'm not sure if it is just the bearings but it does give off a whine just like when a bearing goes, I was looking at having it refurbed but do you not have to get it set up if you do that?
Also how would you find out the correct ratio for my disco?
Thanks for the info by the way
Cheers

My front diff had an amount of shiny flakes in the oil when I first changed it. Going by the amount iron dust on the magnoplug I would doubt the oil had ever been changed in its 165 K miles.
I changed the oil again recently after 5 K miles since I last changed it. There wasn't a huge amount of metal in the oil but a rebuild will be not far off. For the time being, I've filled it with 700 ml of 85w140 with 50 ml of moly grease to prolong the bearings. Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

3.07:1 for manual
3.54:1 for auto
3.73:1 for petrol
if memory serves me right, should have a label on with the ratio There is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance

ok so now im just wondering if i should just have the bearings and seals replaced as there wasnt much metal flakes in the oil when we changed it and the oil did look like it had been in there for a long time, also there is evidence of a leak from one of the seals, i take it this would be an ok job for a competant mechanic? and are any special tools needed?

As you have probably read on other posts it is the internal paint that flakes off and becomes grinding paste for the bearings. During the overhaul this is also removed so surely the bearings will last longer, but it all depends on the quality of them. D3 Tonga HSE 2005

I did my 2007 man about 6 months ago with just the overhaul kit (£125)
I did this as primarily could not find a decent priced replacement, and thought was worth a punt
Been fine since, mine had more of a dry rumble rather than a whine, when up on ramp with wheels spinning sounded like dry/worn bearings, had very little debris and was actually pressurized so fitted new type breather when i came across this during my research.
If not going to do yourself, i would think the prices for either option are going to be about the same
See metal monstors the site sponsors have one available for a good price, anything less than £350 is ok There is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance
