Reliability, what is this reliability you speak of?
This will be my last LR, way too much hassle, just got to keep her going for a few years more.

I had all the same symptoms though without the benefit of fault code diagnosis. The shutdown only occurred when towing at first then got worse and would happen when accelerating hard e.g overtaking. Then would happen doing 70 on motorways. Many trips to local garage failed to diagnose over several frustrating months.
Eventually had a complete failure and the rolling start no longer worked.
Taken by breakdown truck to main dealer who said it was fuel starvation and replaced the hp and LP fuel pumps (£2500).
Problem solved and still runs well some 100,000 miles later!
I hope this helps as like you I was ready to scrap the or drive it into a wall. I've found the lurv again and it really is one of the best, if not THE best vehicles out there.

On the flip side, my sister traded in her Landcruiser for a Discovery becuase she couldn't rely on the Landcruiser: It spent more time being repared and washed by the local dealer than doing what it was designed to do.
My old old bus has 177k on the clock and its is the most riduculously reliable car I have ever had. As with everything - sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

For what it's worth, I think you need to keep on top of a D3.................constantly!!
You need to throw money at any vehicle from time to time. They all need tyres, fuel, brakes, servicing blah blah blah but a D3 needs tender care. If something starts squeeking, fix it, or it'll fail and let you down. If you think a certain component is failing or not working as it should, fix it, or it'll come back to bite you!!
They are a long term project, there's no doubt about that and I don't know of any other car where it's highly advisable if not essential, to have you own OBD diagnositc kit so you can read your own fault codes.
You can buy a lemon from any vehicle manufacturer but as the D3 gets older and the warranty expires, a few car park dings appear, the black plastic starts to fade etc. etc. you have to work ( and spend ) just that little bit harder than you probably would have to with another vehicle to keep the perma grin going. For sure you'll question if sometimes it's worth the hassle but I've found once you get on top of your D3, the bad is far outweighed by the seriously good. Mods:

Couldn't agree more Narpy, they need and deserve lots of TLC and they will repay you with excellent service but neglect them at your peril. When are you going to make Alan a Narpy grill now that he has caught the D3 improvement bug? - Window tints, new side steps, one of your grilles has to be the next stage.

I had the same symptoms with my D3 - to help my local indie diagnose it we went out for a run with the tintent on the back (24ft twin axle) so he could watch the live data as I made it go into limp mode.
I was convinced my D3 was made when Microsoft owned Land Rover as switching it off & back on again cleared the fault Next hill it would go again though.
We fixed it with a new turbo (done with body on so wasn't that traumatic cost wise) & while in there they put an Alisport intercooler in - it's made a huge difference. I pulls the tiptop so well now & without it it's positively now & I never worry about pulling out into traffic.
I've also had a Terraclean equivalent done & that's made it feel smoother too - It'd not fix this sort of issue, but made a difference too. Think it was called Forton & it's cheaper then Terraclean but does the same.
Yes it's not a cheap fix, but the change in the D3 is amazing & the perm-a-grin is most definitely back.
Hope you get it sorted.

My last two cars had similar problems. The first was a split intercollegiate pipe and limp mode was accompanied by lots of black smoke, the second was file starvation (and seems most like your issue). The solution wasn't £1500 worth of fuel pump as the main dealer insisted, but a £75 fuel filter fitted by a local Indy.
The cars in question were a Saab 9-5 and an E class Merc, so it can happy to anything

I've also had issues with after market fuel filters, Bearmach to be exact. Fitted LR one, problem sorted
Interesting you should say that; my last filter was a Bearmach and I got an ESF when it was fitted. Since then, it's been replaced - this time it was a Mahle that came in Steve @ Advanced's box of goodies (and before that it was Wix) - I replace it at every service (10k ~6 months).
I was thinking it's probably the LP pump (haven't bothered to investigate yet since it hasn't returned) but maybe it could have been related to the filter? For the minimal extra cost, I always use OEM filters. That way, you are assured of the quality. Not that AF's stuff is anything less mind My D3 Build Thread
I have noticed, as I had at the time, that my LP pump was whirring a little. TBH, I still suspect it's a case of a weak pump but perhaps in combination with the filter.
