It must be about 3 years or so since I did mine, IIRC I had the front on stands and just laid underneath squirting oil all over the lower UJ while I had someone rock the steering to and fro, the lower UJ is directly on the input shaft to the rack, so just behind the front O/S wheel.

I used normal engine oil from an oilcan rather than WD40, most of the WD tends to evaporate fairly quickly and the rest will wash off in no time, the thicker engine oil lasts very well, I've not had to re-do mine anyway Thumbs Up

No need to take any covers off unless you need to check the bottom clamp bolt for tightness, which I recomend you do and the top one, there is a plastic cover in the bottom front of the wheel arch held on with 4 plastic plugs.
You may be lucky and get away with lubrication but I found that whilst it made the steering lighter and smoother it also created play in the steering, my theory is lubrication washes dirt out of the UJ that has been taking the play up, also there can be wear on the clamp joints which may be taken up by tightening the clamp bolts .
I fitted a new bottom shaft in the end and it vastly improved the stearing, strange thing was I could not see or feel anything wrong with the old shaft to the degree I nearly refitted it Shocked thinking my problem was elsewhere.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
