Vehicle Marking, West Yorkshire Police Report post

Quote:

Tuesday, 27 January, 2015

Calderdale Police are hosting a free Land Rover marking event on Saturday (31 January).

Officers will be at Appleyard Road, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, (HX7 5PE) from 10am until 1.00pm and anyone with a Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport (pre 2013) are encouraged to attend the event.

A mechanic from Land Rover Copley will also be in attendance to help.

Last year the force launched Operation Emporia to combat an emerging issue of Land Rover parts being stolen - particularly LED headlamps but also doors, mirrors, bonnets, wheels, clusters and grills.

It had an immediate impact with 14 people arrested and the number of thefts fell.

"The operation was a considerable success but we are not resting on our laurels and are continuing to take the fight to thieves," said DCI Steve Thomas of Calderdale CID.

"If property is security marked it means that if stolen and subsequently recovered officers will be able to return it to the rightful owner.

"It also means that if we stop a vehicle and then check the marking we can make sure that the part is on the car it is meant to be."

It is a press type release.

Do you expect anything coming out of a press office to be 100% accurate?

Turn up with any Land Rover and I am sure they will mark it.

Why not contact your local police commissioner/police station/main LR dealer and see if they could do something in your area.

Local main LR dealer offers a bit of their car park on a Saturday morning, teas/coffees etc. Good PR and helps local LR community.

Must be worth a couple of phone calls/emails in your area surely ??

They will probably be using something like this.

https://www.selectadna.co.uk

Chesterfield police marked my car with it back in 2011. They mark the car up in a few places to show you how to use it and then let you mark it elsewhere in your own time. The beauty of this type of kit is that it does not matter what the registration number of the car is, the dna is always registered to the home address of the owner - if you sell the car, you have to send a change of owner card in.

The kit I was given, allowed me to mark all the electrical equipment in the house too, you get plenty of stickers to say that everything is DNA marked Thumbs Up

It still lets the police ask the right questions.

It really depends on what the Force are marking it with....probably the best is that used by Datatag or Retainagroup....
Datatag are the company that won the industry tenders to deliver the CESAR plant and machinery marking, the MASTER motor cycle marking and now the new COMPASS boat and engine marking schemes...they are probably the best known and the ones with the best industry standards....they have just introduced a UV etch marking which is brilliant......designed for use on motorbikes it etches the paint but is invisible in normal light....i.e. It doesn't ruin the paintwork with ugly markings on your Ducati...but when shown UV light lights up like a beacon....

Retainagroup are the company who do most of the OEM window laser etching using a code rather than a registration number.....

Then there are lesser marking companies using data dots and dna type paint markings... Although good they do not allow an officer to identify a vehicle in the street...the officer has to take a scraping or have a microscope to read the dot....which in reality isn't going to happen....

So to answer your question...it would help with a clean car but the places they are likely to apply these markings would normally be hidden from view and thus more likely to be dusty rather than dirty. They should not be marking in an area of high use....

Going round your vehicle with an indelible marker can be just as effective......

Obviously the better kits are more expensive but you pays your money.... I personally have CESAR markings on all my horseboxes and car trailers and the Datatag UV etchings on my bikes...if it's good enough for JCB and John Deere and BMW Honda and Suzuki.......

I'd want something visible on any vehicle I had marked not an 'invisible' matrk visble by UV light or such like.

My motorbikes had datatag markings etched into key parts and panels, didn't look out of place to me and as an alpha-numeric system used no probs on private reg numbers Thumbs Up

Think this is a really good initiative though and credit to those involved

Unfortunately there is an equal number who didn't want the markings messing up their bikes.... And the OEMs were very resistant....the good thing now is the fact that the major deterrent is that most new motorcycles are fitted with the Datatag systems where the thieves now realise that all components on a bike are now traceable .....which is a landmark and stops the bike theft as a result....

Alot of people put chassis numbers on rather than number plates.

Chassis number will always stay with the vehicle reguardless of how many personalised plates are put on the veh.

Chassis numbers can be (sometimes) easier to trace Whistle

virtually all parts on the car have 'marking' as such even just a manufacturers date stamp and the sheer volume of legal compliant traceable parts makes it pretty easy to see if it looks a wrong 'un on a different car. Some parts are traceable to the build sequence, VIN number, date, shift, operator, etc. etc.

Not security in the truest sense but useful on 'rung' cars and cut'n'shuts under investigation, etc.
