Thinking of maybe getting one and fitting to my D3 to take a KTM LC400 or similar to Ireland for 3 weeks over summer. (don't actiually own one yet but pretty sure my GS wouldn't go on it without the D3's front wheels coming off the ground!!!)
Any views or alternatives? Good / bad idea?
Can the removable swan neck take the weight?
Thanks

I wanted the same thing to carry my Trials and Enduro bikes but as I only have the detachable tow hitch I was struggling to find a bike rack that would clamp onto the ball with the correct weight rating. In the end I bought the NA 2 inch hitch from the US which goes in to the same mount as the detachable tow hitch, and then bought a motorcycle rack for this. The rack I got from ebay for £80 and is the type that goes on the rear of a motorhome, much the same as the middle one on the web link you have.
If you have the permanant tow hitch then it is much easier as you can just buy a dave cooper and be done with it

Sounds interesting, where did you source the replacement hitch from ? (I take it NA means North America?? )
Which bolt on rack did you get in the end?
Thanks

The hitch is available from dealers over here, can't remember the part no. but if you give Nick a ring at Yeovil I'm sure he'll be able to dig it out and give you a bargain priceThe End

They've got a whole load of stuff available in the US to go into the receiver style hitches that they've got. Bike racks, wheelchair racks, cargo racks, cargo boxes, motorbike racks - anything that can go on is available.
Also handy for people wanting a higher towbar than the standard removable ones, as you can buy the bars that slide in with every variety of heights required.IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

Yes NA is North America, I picked it up on a business trip to California but as the others have said it can be ordered from UK dealers.
The rack I bought was the same as this one which is actually a scooter rack but it will certainly take the weight of a normal trail/enduro bike, although check the length to ensure it is long enough (My XR400 fits).
I had Watling engineering make me an adaptor that slots into the 2 inch hitch and then gives standard size plate that a tow ball could bolt on. I didn't bolt a tow ball on but instead bolted the rack to it. One thing I did think about after I got the plate was that as it now gave a standard bolt pattern, I could have mounted my Dave Cooper bike rack, but had sold it as I could not figure how I could use it with the removable tow hitch
I will try and take some pics over the weekend of it mounted on the Disco.

I've just checked the accessories brochure and all of the tow hitches including the combination (NA) are only rated for a 150kg download and a 3500kg max trailer mass.
Is 150kg enough? It doesn't seem much.

My trials bike is 70Kg and the XR 500 is 116KG (Dry) so probably 125Kg wet minus a full tank of fuel.
