I'm sure this has been mentioned but I thought it best to refresh peoples memories. If you disconnect the battery the electric handbrake defaults to off! So if you're not on perfectly flat ground be ready for it to roll!
It's a bit embarrassing trying to chase after a backwards rolling Disco with a gurt battery and a gammy leg. Don't ask me how I know

I don't believe this is true. I've disconnected my battery plenty of times without the EPB disengaging.
Perhaps your EPB needs adjusting correctly?

Plus what happened to leaving the car in gear? ISTR it was in case the park brake failed.

Over the years had to disconnect my battery many times on my D3's , all manuals , never once had this happen . Would suggest something seriously wrong with your EPB if that happens .

Iget a message come on the screen asking me to lift the handbrake lever. The bit about rolling down hill was tongue in cheek but the car definitely moved and you can hear the hand brake move when you lift the lever and red light comes on.

I am taking it that you had the key out of the ignition, that would bring the EPB on automatically . Sounds like a failure or serious ePB adjustment required .

No key in ignition, handbrake works fine. I'm beginning to think this is a weird motor

My EPB remains firmly applied if I disconnect the battery. I can't see how the EPB motor can drive to release the brakes without battery power.
The brakes must fail in the on position for safety. Can you imagine how dangerous it would be if the battery went flat, causing the EPB to release while the car was parked on a steep hill. Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Like I said it's a weird motor. I'd get rid but it's in having new diff and front wishbone fitted. So another anomaly to get to the bottom of. Tell me does the Priory keep a room free for LR owners. When i get it back I'll show the message whichshows in the dash. Yes leaving it in gear maybe best but then you don't expect the handbrake to fail off. My Passat was definitely the other way round.

When I disconnect and reconnect my battery I get the same message but the parking brake has never released. I have never seen it move an inch either. Although mine is an auto

I hope you are not correct, how can you recover from a steep angle if you cannot start in gear?

Not seen that fault mentioned for Discoverys before - just the odd leaking elbow. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Slight thread drift, but to respond to the above.
If you have 'no clutch' e.g broken cable then starting in gear is the best/only way to drive.
It's happened to me a couple of times, but not in D3, or Cherokee which you could only start with clutch de-pressed. Not sure where the switch was though, at the pedal or at the gearbox/clutch end...
