I think I will do the battery for the next one, and I am quite surprised that both my fobs are still working well. I suppose it's possible that they've been replaced at some point, but they certainly look as if they've done the same miles as the car.

Rare I know, but having read the manual, the batteries are meant to charge while in the ignition. That might explain why they are lasting so long.

I had assumed that they might deteriorate over time and eventually not keep a charge. Perhaps I've been lucky.

The battery is a rechargeable lithium cell. These do have a life of around 10 years but loose capacity as they age in the same way a mobile phone battery does. From what I've seen, the battery connections break before the battery fails to open the car through.
I changed both of my batteries while I had the circuit out of the casing. Made sense really. Freelander SE 2005 Auto.
