So is a "break disc" not something to do with dancing (of sorts) ?

He dove into the water or he dived into the water?

He lit a cigarette or he lighted a cigarette?

Ah but...

"He was hanged" - - not "he was hung" (unless you finish the sentence with "..like a donkey!" Thumbs Up

It would be "hanged" only in the executed sense I believe, others would be "hung".

A cigarette could have "been lit" or "been lighted", they are both past participles. However, you can't say "I lighted", only "I lit".

Always "dived"; "dove" (the verb) is American. Thumbs Up

Drive demonstrates it nicely too. I "drove"; the car was "driven".

Brought and bought are both past tense and past participles so can be used in either manner. They are still different verbs though. Wink

Another word often abused is the word paid.
Why do so many insist on using payed?
I doubt that spelling of it even exists yet it has become almost common place on forums and online.

Can the Panel please define the difference between 'ground' and 'floor'.

To me the ground is anywhere outside and floor is somewhere indoors.

F'r'instance:

I would not say 'he fell on the floor' if it related to someone falling over in a carpark or field.

However if he fell over in the gym then it would be 'fell on the floor'.

Is it just us older folks who get upset with improper usage? The English language is always evolving but it's getting faster and faster, I blame the TV Soaps for a lot of it.

We could start a thread on phrases that are used all the time but are superfluous, maybe we had one... I can't remember and can never get the search on here to work using more that one word Rolling with laughter
