Its not a speeling test, I actually think some people deliberatley use 'brought' instead of 'bought', I don't think they are thickos that's why I wondered if the English language had changed Confused

As I said I have heard people talking and say they brought something, just very confusing.

The expression "bought it" has another connotation, viz:

"My oppo bought it and we buried him on the battle field."

Where does that come from?

What get me is the wording in some of the motorway overhead signs.
Most annoying is "debris in the road" ...... it's not 'in' but 'on' the road.
...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I think that's a shortened version of the US WWII slang, 'bought the farm', which is basically bitter sarcasm about finally ending up with a piece of land of their own.

The problem comes when the X millions use a word in a certain way so Oxford change the meaning / use in the dictionary. Then, improper use becomes the norm.

Take the word Ruler for instance. Helix even print the word RULER on kids school rules - wrong!!!!

The word is RULE (taken from the French Riule which I beieve (?) comes from a latin word meaning straight stick (?).

Anyway, my daughter says I'm just awkward when I pull her up for asking "pass me my ruler please".
"It's RULE dear, RULE!"

Soz - that turned into a rant - wrong thread I guess Big Cry
