I've got 39SP, reg transfers offered me £8500 for it if they cools sell it and then advertised it at £12000. I shan't hold my breath...

They do that all the time. I had offers for a few plates that they then listed for at least 50% more (people use that inflated figure to justify its value when they try selling it privately for more than they were offered by the dealer as well - done it myself too ).
A lot of plate trader sites actually list plates they don't have access to - I've had people question the validity of my ownership as they've "seen it for sale online".
They also often list 'standard' DVLA plates for sale at inflated prices that you can get from DVLA direct for a lot less. Always worth a double check if you spot one you like
I bought B19 OAP (ready for when I sucumb to a big old Harley or something as my 'biking years near their end) direct off the DVLA for £299 or thereabouts and some 'speculator' had it listed on eBay for a couple of grand or something. He had a few plates listed like that at inflated selling price but they were all still available off DVLA cheaper. Obviously punting for a sale and then get it off DVLA if it 'sold' on eBay for a quick profit

Good grief, reading this thread has given me a headache trying to work out what the plates are meant to be spelling
....and the amount of times I have said "ooh your car is in good condition, I didnt know they made them back then" only to be told by an upset owner that I was looking at a private plate they had spent alot of money on... oops.
I have asbergers so I take things very literally and assume that is why I just cant read the damn things
