Which tyres for work and play?
Hi,
Im trying to decide what tyres to fit to my newly acquired Disco.
The main things i will be doing is towing a 3.5ton Ifor trailer fully loaded (mostly on road but do need to be able to tow across fields too), driving down farm tracks and in fields in most weather but will also be covering a fair few on road miles so noise and impact on fuel consumption is also a issue.
So far ive been looking at General AT and what i used to have on my defender which was continental cross contact AT (worked very well for my needs with the defender).
So can i ask what other peoples experience and opinions are?
Many thanks.
Pete.

I've gone for the GG AT and I'm very pleased with them. However, if I had to tow 3.5t across fields on a regular basis then I'd choose something slightly more aggressive like the AT2. I've had them on several previous LR's and always been impressed.Darren

Its not a regular basis that there towed in fields, and very rarely in fields fully loaded unless its dry.
Think the GG AT2 will be a bit too much for my needs.
Thanks.

I'm similar to you, 3.5ton trailer mainly on the road but about once a week in a field and i have GG AT2. Brilliant if you ask me, I've never got stuck and I'm often quite stupid!
Once a catering unit was stuck, 3,5 ton FWD van with a fridge trailer on it, all looked pretty heavily laden and he pointed to where he wanted to be so I towed him to where I thought he meant but it was wrong, my mate was watching and apparently none of my wheels span at all while he was in full lock with mud flying everywhere trying to go in the opposite direction!!26 and on the 4th LR..

How does the the Duratrac compare to the AT? Ive driven a few Discoverys with the GG AT but not the Duratrac.
Cheers.

The General AT2 is a brilliant tyre, I had them on my D1.
However, they are not available in a 255/55 19 so personally I think that the best option would be either the Duratrac or Cooper LTZ.
A friend of mine runs the LTZ's but he is not convinced by them in heavy mud although he does do a fair bit of serious off-roading in his D3.
I think the General AT is a bit too road biased.
I think that I am going to go with the Duratracs

I have found the DuraTrac is a tad harsher on the road but better off road.
Different tyres suite different people and needs.
