I'm in the process of trying to decide on an appropriate set of winter boots for the Disco and would be interested on thoughts and recommendations of those with experience of different tyres in different conditions on T5 platform vehicles, especially those with northern Scandinavian experience.
The main reason for their purchase is three fold;
1) Scandinavian drive next March / April where in two and a half weeks we'll be circumnavigating the Baltic, including the Nord Cap, Trollsteigen, Atlantic Road, Riksvei 55, omevegen, Tromso, Heksinki, St Petersburg, Tallinn and the Estonian Ice Roads around Hiiumaa. Having done a good number of jaunts throughout Sweden and Finland mainly in the cold seasons I know that from year to year it's very hard to know what the conditions will be like but I want to ensure I'm.... well prepared.
2) Preparedness for my basic UK winter driving which usually includes finding the most remote and often highest tracks (paved if not snow covered, not byways) in the what ever winter we will get.
3) Christmas shopping sprint to Germany mid December
In a former life I have assessed many MANY different winter tyres in varying conditions around Europe on various manufacturers vehicles but with limited experience outside of the manufacturers recommended on LR product (apart from a day on ice in a supercharged RRS with no abs or dsc with studded tyres (the brand escapes me) but the lateral capacity possible was just incredible) I do have limited knowledge.
Constraints
- snowflake marked tyres only
- must have a speed rating appropriate for autobahn driving
- no studded tyres
Thoughts?
Also be interested to know if anyone has direct comparison experience of the same winter tyre brand in the two standard D4 sizes; 255/50r20 & 255/55r19 as would be happy to purchase a cheap set of 19" rims if it really did make an improvement in pull away, braking, cornering capacity etc
Thoughts?
Thanks

It is generally accepted that Lower speed ratings are acceptable on Winters H as you equals more than the D4 can do any how

are you fitting studs ?
personally I would go for the Nokians....or Gislaved if you can get them BREXIT - done properly.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

What winters do you run Bruce on your Disco ?
He said NO studs
Nokians are great just not available (readily) in the UK and this has to be a consideration .

I run all year on Wintracs....on my 3rd set now
I have used this brand since the 80's & cant fault the tyre
Nokian I was quoted for in Halifax (Le Halifax..part of le Tour)...& was 4 day delivery (Pellon Tyres)
Why I asked about studs ....thought in some of the Nordic Contries these were sort of normal & maybe even mandatory....reckon the local to there wont be wrong.. BREXIT - done properly.

Yes I do rate Nokians and have been recommended them in the past, I had a look at their Nordic compound non studded tyre that gets fantastic reviews but strangely it's not snow flake marked?
Strangely their cheaper (nearly half the price) WR compound tyres are snow flake marked?
I know M+S is the legal requirement during the winter in most mainland European countries but the tyre industry themselves use the snowflake symbol to differentiate true winter tyres from M+S all season tyres.
Strange.....

Good supply of single malt and keep warm in front a nice fire, and if you have to go out in the cold and snow the majority of my customers use Wintracs.
Nokians are very good though.
