That's excellent would like to take my car out.
Could you please tell how you went about sorting insurance, that seems to be the thing I cannot find anything about.

Kev91, I had the same problem in finding insurance, no UK company I contacted would offer it. Eventually I found that HC Travel (David Grist) organise motorcycle trips to US with you own bike . I contacted them & they pointed me to an underwriters in the US. I don't have the details now but HC Travel still trades 01256 770775 & they also arranged my flights and initial hotel bookings.

I love Utah.
It's one of the most diverse states I've visited. I was lucky enough to work out of SLC and Lindon for a few weeks a couple of years ago, spending my weekends down in the parks of the south.
Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park were particular favourites:

Weird rock formations (known as "Hoodoos") in Bryce Canyon. With freezing temperatures more than 200 days a year, a relentless cycle of freezing and thawing widens cracks in the cliffs. Runoff scours away the frost-wedged debris and cuts narrow gullies between walls, eventually isolating pinnacles and exposing them to even more weathering.

The view from the top of Angel's Landing, Zion National Park, looking towards Springdale. Lots of California Condors are on the lookout for food from the tourists who visit.

This tagged California Condor landed within a few feet of me at the top of Angel's Landing, Zion National Park.
Visit Utah!

I think Bryce Canyon was one of the best places I visited, better than the Grand Canyon which I thought was a little
bit too overwhelming to really appreciate.

Back again this year for 6 weeks in Sept. 2012 was all Arizona & New Mexico. 2013 was S Dakota, Wyoming then back down to Monument Valley, Kanab, Moab then Colorado. This year it's Nevada, N California, Utah and maybe Glacier National Park in Montana but first it's Grand Canyon North Rim because Obama and his politician friends closed everything down last year including, unbelievably, all military cemeteries, monuments, memorials in the US and abroad. That wasn't reported on the UK news was it? And he had the nerve to swagger around Normandy last week when only a few months ago those self-same Veterans were physically stopped from paying their respects or visiting the grave of a loved one. The Vietnam Wall in Washington was blocked off until a group of Veterans said F*** this and tore the barriers down. A shameful episode in the Obama administrations time. What a despicable hypocrite of a man!
Anyway, enough said. Great country. Great people. Great times. Also got a wee bit emotional standing where the Duke (Captain Nathan Brittles) stood in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon at Gouldings Lodge. Now how's that? You retire a Captain with a new watch and even before the sun's gone down you're promoted to Lt Col!! No came after me although there's still time if the Sioux leave the reservation I suppose. Won't apologise for my above rant because an old cavalryman once said, "Never apologise Mister. It's a sign of weakness".

I did Travel in the US is so simple and strangely quite relaxing. Go online and request stuff from each State Tourist Board. You'll receive maps, leaflets, booklets containing stacks of info and ideas....all free! In gas stations, tourist offices hotels & motels you will find free accommodation guides with coupons for great deals on room prices. Trip Advisor is good and helpful. Just do your research. Americans are very warm and welcoming to people who have made the effort to visit their country.
During 25 years in the British Army I served with and alongside US Forces both in training and operations........we are different and they are perhaps not quite as flexible as the Brits nor able to operate outside strict guidelines and rank structures. In our Army a Lance Corporal can be an Infantry Section Commander expected to use initiative etc. The US have Squad Leaders and the like, usually at junior Sergeant rank so they can be a wee bit by the rule book and occasionally downright dangerous!! Nevertheless, strip all that away and you will discover good people. Take interest in them, learn something of their 'shortish' history and it will pay off.
Last visit I pre-booked all accommodation but this year we will revert to stopping wherever the sun is setting and the nearest bar is opening. Some motels will ask Cash or Credit Card? Pay cash, your room will be better! Let them worry about the tax
I'm a wee bit disabled (when I won my third VC on the balcony) but we are still considering staying for six months or more in 2015. L319 has given me much room for thought. You will love it just avoid 'biscuits and gravy'. Remember their bacon is crap and v expensive for some bloody reason and even Americans will agree that in general the coffee is To quote my all-time favourite cowboy (after JW of course), "Happy trails".
