Is the '4' more reliable than the '3'

Alright chaps, I've now had my '07 HSE 3 for nearly 3 years, and my wonderful and much used Hartwell warranty will expire in around a month. I am not keeping it beyond the warranty!! Why?

Aircon failure
Coolant leak
Tailgate failure (top and bottom!)
Gear selector switch
Suspension issues
Fuel pump replacement
EGR Valves
Parking brake issues
TWO new expensive LR batteries (one was faulty)
Front diff
Various engine warning lights/failure/limp modes that turn out to be bulbs
Warning light on brake pads don't come on meaning I eat rear discs
I could go on...

Car is on 116K now anyway (I do 20K a year).

I've test driven a 4, no doubt it is a lovely car and feels like a good move...but God I can't stand another three years and 7 grand of warranty claims. Is it a more reliable car? Popular surveys seem to say no....

Is the 4 more reliable than the 3?? I want to buy one, mainly as I can't think of another car that ticks all the boxes, but I cannot cope with a whole new load of issues!

people sya LRs are not reliable but I have seen many small cars by the side of the road while in 5 years of going pretty much anywhere i could we have never got to the point of not being able to carry on the trip.

would love a change but not sure I want nice interior or being stuck by the side of the road.

They do seem to be much more reliable than D3s (mine used to love its extra visits to the dealers, sometimes on the back of a yellow taxi) but it's early days for the D4s. D3 engine problems are rearing their heads now, D4s aren't at that stage yet. But the age old issues like EGRs & EPBs seem to be a lot batter. As Robbie says, there are 250,000 prototype D4 driving around.

Nobody buys a LR on it's reliability, if you want that you need a Honda. Thumbs Up

Looks like you've about fixed everything on yours - you could sell it now and the next owner will get 100,000 miles of trouble free motoring!

Having had all sorts of LR products over the last 30 years - I reckon it takes about 80,000 miles from new to sort out all the things that are wrong when they leave the factory - experience has shown me that 80k is the right time to buy them.

I've only had two with lower mileage - a P38 with 36k and a SeriesIII with about 10 - and they were both a nightmare. Now you've got yours sorted, drive it into the ground - or sell it to someone like me for peanuts Smile

DSL, you are so grumpy Rolling Eyes Laughing

Ive had D4s now since 2010 and not had any issues apart from a small PDI issue on the 2010HSE.

but then, I didn't get all the D3 issues with EGRs, EPBs, Oil pumps, turbos etc and all the other issues other people seem to get with the D3s.

my main D3 issues where wheel bearings. but , when its driven through liquid sand and flint impregnated clay and mud, that was to be expected.

ive always felt that those vehicles that aren't used much and bumble about at low speeds or sit idle for days do seems to get more problems.

its a bit like me - if I sit around all day doing nothing, I become fat, unhealthy and I ache from lack or exercise Laughing

Does seem to be better, although apart from a replacement engine my D3 was pretty good, just age related problems you would get on any car

Grumpy, me?? Laughing That was me being optimistic. Laughing Laughing

No longer say I won't buy a D4 because of the lack of reliability I've experienced with the D3, I now say I won't buy a D4 because I can't afford it!! Whistle Whistle Thumbs Up

Have to agree with this statement. Even with a D3, there are not that many issues that would leave you stranded by the side of the road...

Never let a LR know it's being good, it will turn around and bite you.

Cars are that used regularly seem to be more reliable.
Also how they are used will affect it, mine is a town car for most of its use and does 16k a year.
When I did a full refurb on the suspension, a mates D3 of similar mileage showed no signs of wear that mine had. His was a motorway car so got an easier life.

Some of your faults are not D3 related, like the battery and EGR valves. That can happen to any car or any diesel.
Some are bad luck like the air con as I've had to change to condensor on mine at 8 1/2 years old.
You could buy an after market warrenty if it gives you peace of mind but I just put some cash aside to cover anything needed.
 In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Rest well old friend, your work is done.
