Overheat warning!!!! :-(
Was doing a bit of cross country driving heading norff as the A9 was closed at Blair Atholl but half way through the unofficial detour the temp needle goes to the top and the red light comes on.
I was dong a fair bit of hoofing up & down hills (from Perth to Aberfeldy road, along Glen Quaich then up & over from Tummel Bridge towards Trinafour). Car was pretty heavily laden with 2 seat sofa, lawn mower, big TV, full tank & about another 100kgs of stuff. Ext temp 17c. Stopped for about 20 minutes to let it cool then headed off carefully with the heat on max & windows open. Needle stayed in the right place but I could feel the air warm up when I went slowly up hills til I got to the A9 again and cruised at 60.
Have never had this before, has something gone Pete Tong? Radiator, water pump? I did notice the viscous fan cutting in 15 minutes before which is something new to me. Or was I just pressing on too much with a heavy car and she didn't like it.
Thoughts peeps, please.

I would guess, radiator partially blocked, or viscous fan chuffed. But that's only a guess.....

Might be the former, was a bit muddy on Da Plain at Chrimbo.

Going to get the hose out tomorrow & put a lot of water through it. Will see what I can do with the Mantec plate in place, if not enough then will drop it. Hopefully I don't need to take the bumper off, way outside my skill set.
Daft question but can you hose from rear to front from inside the engine bay (being careful not to sprey backwards)? Basically hosing through the fan.

Its a bit difficult to hose from the back Del. There are some early threads on here all about it. In the end, it was easier to strip the front down to clean it properly.

Del, your ECT sensor has failed, nothing more. Dead cheap and dead easy to fit yourself - even for you.

Will get one & swap it out. Deffo done a lot more hot driving (42c in Tunisia) without an issue. I must confess i did stare at the red light for 20 seconds or so before I clicked what was going on.
Now to persuade SWMBO that I can be trusted to do this!!

Going to pick up an ECT sensor next time I'm up in Inveness & get it swapped out. I read the instructions out to SWMBO and she points out that there is more than 6 instructions so I'm doomed.
Couple of questions. Obviously this is done when the car is cold, is the system still under a bit of pressure so does it vent (& then I need to replace) coolant? I suppose I could slacken off the overflow bottle cap to release the pressure.
Also, what's a "tang"? Is that the bit in the following pic that looks like the top of a zippo lighter opened up?

There is not much residual pressure but opening the coolant bottle will indeed release it. The tang is just a bit of plastic that prevents the sensor from twisting itself free. Pushing on it will allow the bit on the sensor that sticks out enough room for the sensor to twist off. It will make sense when you have it in your hand.
The amount of coolant lost is all but a good time to check the coolant level and all other fluid levels, the hoses, battery clamps and the general condition of everything whilst you are under there.
