With all programming it is good practice to start with a fully charged battery and to connect an alternate source of power to ensure that the voltage does not drop due to the staggeringly high current draw.

I have a IID tool and too be honest it's all done through the car instrument dash using the cruise control buttons. Never had any battery issues and been playing for at least 1hr on a few occasions
I do check battery and charge one a week anywayIggy/Ieuan

As Robbie says, it's good practice to have a power source connected, to keep voltages up during any programming work.
Not particularly essential, but D3/D4's are very power hungry, so the more you do to keep it happy, the less likely anything will go wrong during writing/programming My D3 Build Thread

I've recently purchased the Bluetooth IID Tool, very good and they're always expanding what you can do with it......
The best bit, is that it's small and quick to use
I also have an MSV2, very capable, but I lack the talent it requires to use it fully
