travelling with four dogs in a D3
Has any one got a solution for travelling with four dogs in a D3?
When I got them I had a D2 and lived a five minute drive from walks etc so the were each secured in the back but individually without using a cage.
Now I'm in the middle of no where and have to travel 3 hours each way including some off road to get to the vet and I plan to do a few expeds this year taking them with me so they need to be properly protected as does the car.
I took measurements yesterday and the cars too narrow for even three so I guess I'll have to drop the second row seats as well.
Just wondering how best to make use of the available space? If we weren't supposed to eat meat why did God make animals taste so good?

I have just fitted this lot today, it's made by a company called Dog Trans( or Gamehawker as they started out as) http://www.dogtran.co.uk
Similar to the Cab Dog units, but in my opinion a nicer option.
It has replaced my Lintran one, which aren't a cheap cage, but the quality difference is obvious.
The one I have fitted perfectly fills the entire load space, but the point I'm trying to make is that they custom make the majority of their cages, so you can literally have whatever you want for your needs.
My lab fits inside with masses of extra room available.
You could have the same , or a huge one that takes both rows of seats , space wise, or possibly , you could have the normal loadspace area, then a sort of annexe on the end that takes the space of one folded down second row seat, still leaving space for two adults in the second row, should you need it.
You can choose the height if it, and have a storage area on top, mine is as high as it is due to the drawers , without them it would be roomier in the back.
Depends on how often it will be used, what difference it will make to you , and how much you want to spend .
All the best with it
Cheers, Nick

How heavy is it and do they do them in light colours? Black seems a bit of a flaw on a warm day.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

It's not the lightest thing, but then neither was my smaller Lintran one, and I haven't lifted a Trans K9 one so can't comment, though as they are steel, I can't imagine they would be lighter.
Can't see the colour being an issue, it has to come through the glass , be sat long enough for it to soak through the 6 mm wall of the crate, it's not in any way sealed, as in, it's vented, sides/back and there is not front as it's got doors.
If it's that hot in the car, then whether in a black coloured crate, or a normal wire cage , it is simply too hot for a dog to be left for any period. and regardless of that, windows /sunroof would be left open anyway.
I have seen it mentioned before on forums, and the answers are all pretty much the same, as in , not a problem, time will tell, but I have no qualms about the heat issue.
They are great for retaining the hair/dust/general crap that they get covered in whilst out on walks, if they are wet and shake, then it contains the splatter instead of spraying it all over the interior.
Edited to say : Oops just noticed the OPs location , so all of my drivel is irrelevant to someone living outside the uk , sorry Procrastination is the thief of time!!

ideas are beginning to gel
Thanks for the feed back. When I posted I was thinking more along the lines of how to lay things out.
I have to separate the ginger ninja whilst on the move or he spends the whole time grumbling at the others. So perhaps a double box with divider at the tail gate end and another running width ways over the folded second row seats accessed through the rear passenger doors. Both can be positioned from the tail gate.
I've seen the k9 stuff and some others but not the other two.
As you've surmised, given my location, its likely I'll have to make some thing or have some thing made.
No need to be sorry Windowlicker, I appreciate any and all feed back. Besides you gave me an idea, I'm wondering if they could send them to me flat packed for me to assemble on arrival.
They all seemed to steel, does any one know of aluminium versions? If we weren't supposed to eat meat why did God make animals taste so good?

Does the metal not cook the dogs? This is why I like Lintran, light colours and better thermal properties.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

1 x hatchbag bootliner + 1 x LR dog/load guard + 1 x LR boot divider kit + 1 x extra LR boot divider gate & frame + a bit of ally channel and a couple of bolts and wingnuts :
Although the divider is designed to go in one position, once the gate frames are secured in the channel, with a bog standard angle bracket and a couple of holes drilled you can position it at pretty much anywhere in the boot
Our setup works fine with 2 x Labs, 1 x Cocker and 1 x Springer, crates are great and are supposed to be safer in the event of a crash for the dogs but I don't have anywhere to put one when it's not in use and also with this way they get the use of the whole width of the boot and theeeeennn......???

Hi Magnet,
The one I have in the picture, as with other similar brands , is made from polypropylene , they are Cad drawn and cut, then they are welded at the joints, so it isn't something you could assemble even if they did flat pack supply them.
The Trans K9 ones I think are Aluminium and steel, and looking at them, they dont appear to be welded, but possibly bolted or riveted .
I am sure I have seen mention of them delivering abroad, definitely worth asking the question though. Procrastination is the thief of time!!

We have three including a Dane. All stay in the back with no cage. No issues even after a fierce tree lept out and attacked F/OS. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

blue meanie that looks great. Would you mind taking a couple of extra photos of the components and how you have it set up?
What sort of job does it do of protecting the interior? My lot made such a mess of the D2 and no amount of hoovering and brushing could keep up with it.If we weren't supposed to eat meat why did God make animals taste so good?
