Sunroof drain
After checking everything it seems the sunroof drain is blocked.
Having looked at you tube there seems a quick fix, use a thin wire and gently push it down the drain from the top to clear it .
Has anyone done this does it work or will it cause other problems, I'm nervous of making things worse..

I used 3mm strimmer wire that worked well but i didnt risk pushing it through the bulkhead grommet i removed the air intake and the wheel arch liner to do them by hand

apparently a net curtain wire is good.
But this only works if its leaking at the headliner

Looking at the age of your D3 the elbows will be rotten, so rather than do the job twice, get a pair of upgraded elbows and replace them. The drivers side is easy and the passenger side will make you swear
There are lots of photos on here and a few good YouTube videos.

Many thanks for the information, I will try all of them when it's dry outside. If they fail my garage will take a look at it next week, they say it is probably the lower end of the drain plug, after many years they block up and cause the problem. They say that on the passengers side it's more difficult as they have to remove the fuse board to gain access .
They know what they are doing as they worked for a local main dealer before they set up on their own. So more expense

Quick fix, and cheap..
Sikaflex 291 black, Cost a tenner, never leaks again...and looks like a factory job...
I had a look at the function of the roof when i bought the motor.. it is opening only 1/2 effectively
I have aircon, what is the sole purpose if it? I can not even put my head through it...
The materials off the lifting levers is/are plastic... cracks were visible allready (well after 15 years) i found the risk of malfunctioning and therefore possible leaks and possible electrical damage in the furure a bigger disadvantage than the possibility to open it “never” againBest regards

if proper cleaned (the rubber that is) and applied with Sika 291, rather subtile, it can be removed in some future, rather easy if a future seller or your self want other wise... i pulled the fuse, so no elecrical or mechanical damage can be done.
regarding your site note:
nice ! for your interest i just bought a BSA DBD34 scrambler privately, did come with both a scrambler cylinder head and a Clubman cylinderhead, so can decide the future direction towards the type of rebuild later on Best regards

Sorted
My garage gave me a tip, gently pour some warm water into the drain hole .I repeated this many time over a few days, it took a while for the water to drain once it drained quickly I blew air down it with my tyre inflator using the needle that you can use to inflate footballs.
After a while there was a nice puddle of mucky water on the drive.job sorted I will do this on a regular basis

However you are just putting off the inevitable.

Why remove functionality
I get it, but I chose to use weed trimmer line and gently nudge it down bit by bit until it came out of the drain elbow. I did also use warm water, poured into the drain then snaked the line down. Also keep a check on the A/C drains at the center dash. I had more overflow and filled up both sides. Still smells a bit musty. I make this a part of the routine service at 5K miles.
I also have a raised air intake so getting at it will be a PITA. I will eventually replace the drain, as I am sure with 15 years on her that the rubber end is about had its life span. Plan to do that next time I need a rebuild on the front suspension valve.
You can remove the bottom glove box and have a look up in that area to make sure the elbow is connected thru the fender as designed.
I like the sunroof although it can pose issues, good for opening on a hot humid day here in south North Carolina, and since its limited opening, that keeps the skinny car burglar out vice getting at the windows/locks thru a cracked window.
Well that's just my reason for keeping the sunroof functional and every now and then opening it up to stick my hand out of the top, LMAO.2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic
