Crankshaft Position Sensor
Hi
Anyone had any experience with the Crankshaft Position Sensor failing on a TDV6 D3 - just had this diagnosed on mine (Left us stranded on the Motorway at start of holiday - typically!!!!!)
Been 3 weeks in a local specialist and they have traced it to this - says LR advise it is a body off job but that the alternative is a turbo off job and is cheaper - going for that one!!!!
Just knocks your confidence when the vehicle had a full LR dealer history and has wanted for nothing Since I have owned it but that something like this can fail and it is not a cheap fix!!!!!!!
Any thoughts or advice appreciated

A crank sensor is fiddly, but no way is it a turbo or body off job My D3 Build Thread

In fairness the original workshop manual for the D3 did have 'remove turbo' as the first step, but that is more challenging with the body on than the CKP. The latest D4 workshop manual recognises that turbo removal is a fools errand and the technician has to man up and ket the job done by hand.
The idea that you would have to remove the body is madness.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Hi there.
I had this fault happen to me in the middle of the north York moors at about nine o'clock one Sunday night in December last year. I managed to get to my destination but not before half dozen cut outs and only a couple of miles between each episode.
I emailed Pete bell for advice and he was brilliant. Luckily I had my bas box with me and Pete said to read the faults and clear them, they translated to crank shaft position sensor fault. Pete reckoned it was a very rare thing for a crank shaft sensor to go wrong.
Anyway the long and short of it is that since clearing the fault I've had no problems.
Did you get all the lights up on the dash? And suspension down?
I will watch this thread with interest.

I had just pulled onto the motorway and got the Engine management light on (Yellow I think) the engine shut down and I pulled onto the hard shoulder, no other messages or alarms, and the suspension didn't go down (Although I did pull over straight away so difficult to say for certain)
The engine would still crank but no way was it starting!!!!!! When the RAC man came he plugged his laptop in and read faults PO407 (EGR v/v) PO196 (Engine oil temp) and P2127 throttle pedal sensor. When he was plugged in and the engine cranked he said there was fuel pressure there which made him think it was an EGR stuck open / closed!
Recovered to a local garage who do Land Rovers
After quite a while (Although to be fair to him I told him I wasn't in any rush) he diagnosed the crankshaft position sensor - he said the fuel pressure was only building to 40psi and should have been circa 2K? which initially he suspected the fuel pump (That was going to be £700!!)
Anyway after a week or so he re-diagnosed that there was a fault with the position sensor and is going to replace the sensor, the ring, and whilst gearbox off do some filter thats in there as well!! Plus the MOT!!!!
As an engineer myself he certainly seemed to follow all the logical paths of inquiry to diagnose the fault and so far has kept me updated really well so apart from the massive bill cant fault him!
But yes it has gone back to a body off job - but I am taking the stance I dont care - I have been without my car for several weeks and am fed up with driving around in a courtesey car!!!!!! So just want it back now!
One lesson learnt though was that I have a faultmate and it will be living in the car from now!!!!!!!!

A bit worrying that the diagnosis has been all over the place. I'm also concerned that he feels the need to replace the ring without seeing what a new sensor would do (even if it is the CKP).

Mine would not start until the "gone to sleep" mode kicked in, then would be in limp home mode only. Fine if home is only 2 miles away so this took about an hour to get to my destination and luckily I was on quiet roads.
It's most odd as its not happened since but I'm always a bit worried when going on a long journey. Perhaps it's just one of those weird ghost faults that occur and never comes back once cleared, well that's what I'm hoping anyway.
What else will you do when bodies off?
I have noticed chaps doing brake lines and wax oiling difficult areas also do your fuel timing belt and tensioner.
You could p.m. disco Mickey as he knows only to well about body off jobs you can do. I don't know him personally but he is very generous with his knowledge.
Guy. Ps hope it goes well.D3 bonatti grey
If you have the body off you should IMHO consider doing the belt change, and I would:-
Check EGRs & turbo & turbo pipes
Check High Pressure Fuel Pump
In addition to all belts (front & rear) replace both idler pulleys, bolts & tensioner & bolts.
Consider replacing water pump - flush & replace coolant.
Consider replacing oil pump assembly & bolts - new plate for 07 onwards is LR013487 £47.04 forum price - less than 3 hours extra labour when doing all belts etc... with body off.
Replace rear brake lines
Check anti-roll bar bushes
Check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine
Wash chassis & underside of body, (re) apply Waxoil where necessary.
For any possible future turbo removal to be made as easy as possible, remove the turbo, take out the studs and drill the threads out to 8mm. Use 2x M8 flange bolts to refit. This aids turbo removal massively, and is also much quicker.
Ask for the old parts from the cam belt change, especially the rear tensioner pulley & check that they are using LR parts.
By 100,000 miles expect problems with some, or all of the following:-
so with body off check all bushes & the like & consider whether any action is required.
Finally consider replacing the clutch if it's a manual.
Good luck.

A very good list but I remain unconvinced that the car needs the body off at all.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Back when the D3 was first launched, I remember there were a number of cars that would log a crank sensor fault, and needed the gearbox removed and a new trigger wheel fitted. Was a dodgy batch of rings IIRC. Not seen a fault like that for years and years now though...My D3 Build Thread

I wonder whether the Crankshaft position sensor could be a bit of a red herring sometimes? Had mine changed earlier in the year as I was suffering below zero degrees starting issues ( if you can remember when it was that cold!) and the crankshaft sensor was the only thing showing an error. It made no difference to the usual running of the engine and still shows up now even though it was changed fortunately not at my expense has made no difference subsequently and I will have to wait for for our ferocious winter to come before I will know whether it has fixed the cold starting issue.and theeeeennn......???

Thanks for all of the comments - I got the car back last Friday after a saga of epic proportions involving a garage who I am not sure I can mention but who I dont think could lie straight in bed (Not the one the car was originally recovered too though!)
Had it for the sum total of 4 days when SWMBO went outside at 10pm and came in to tell me there was a big pool of oil under the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another long story involving two garages and the need to go and do some harm to a complete idiot at a certain garage and have it back again - still without the sump cover on because there is a damp spot on the rear where there may or may not be a leak!!!!
Anyway back to the original problem it wasn't a body off job in the end, dont even think it was a turbo off but was a gearbox off and the Crank sensor & Pick up ring were replaced (although done wrong by the first garage) and the ring was put in the wrong place!
Wont say too much about a certain garage in Leeds (Not now after a few whiskys) but they are complete charlatans but they have you by the short and curlies!!!! I think LR should take a car and invent some faults and go round and audit these so called specialists! Or someone should!!!!
Anyway car is sort of back now but completely fed up now (With a big hole in the bank balance!) - might have to go back to a Ford Focus!!!!!
Thanks for your comments though and if someone can explain to my why I still love Land Rovers that would help
Cheers

Independent garage!
Also just having a trawl through here and Robbie - you gave the certain garage in question a thumbs up and they were the ones who said it was a body off job!
Anyway I have decided to relate all of my woes direct to LR and see if they can do anything to help me!!!!!!!!
