Hello All,
I've just hesitantly inherited a D3 from a friend.
He lives in London, didn't want to pay the ULEZ charges and knew I was looking at a 4x4 for my next car as I live in Scotland.
If I'm honest I had discounted the D3 due to the expense of running it and had settled on a XC90 (If I'm allowed to say that on this forum).
Anyway, cut a long story short he did a big service on it before I picked it up this weekend.
Unfortunately in the 48hrs since owning it, Land Rover ownership is proving as troublesome as I feared it would be. Ha.
It smokes on start-up (which he never said it used to), it won't accelerate until the engine revs get to 2500rpm and it then blows out puffs of smoke on the road when the engine down shifts or accelerates for example.
Having read the forum it looks like this could be EGR, air is getting into the turbo hoses some how or it could be the MAF sensor.
Does this require a LR specialist or would my local garage be able to diagnose this? Anyone know a specialist in and around Edinburgh if required?
My wife's fallen in love with the car already but as I'm the one picking up the bills and need to keep the car running I'm not sold on LR life yet.
It's a D3 TDV6 HSE with 160k on the clock and has just had a big service so a little surprising all of this has happened in the 400 miles since.
Thanks in advance.

I had a few jobs done on mine recently by a non spec garage that I’ve always used on other cars. It won’t be going back there again.
I will always use an Indi now for the D3, take it to the specialists who know the vehicle, it will definitely save you money in the long run.
One job ended up costing me almost double due to the labour time as it was the first time they had tackled that particular job, job tht would have been a piece of cake for an indi. 2005 Disco3 HSE Auto 😁

Mike is a busy man and booked full until some time end of November last time I spoke to him about 2 weeks ago. You may have to wait a tad . Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

If you have a 2006 you can blank off the EGRs without need for any software patches, so could be easily fixed if it is an EGR issue. LR used to use 2p coins to temporarily blank them when the issues first started to appear back in the day...
Worth checking the intercooler hose as well as that can break down near the top or near the bend (top L/H side of the engine bay - big black hose going into the top of the engine cover - if it is soft if you squeeze it look for splits in the hose as that can also give you similar issues (along with laying a trail of smoke behind the car like a battleship)
Good Luck
Must stop buying shiny toys....

Could just be the big intercooler hose. Good luck getting it fixed. They’re awesome cars but you need to find a specialist you can trust.
