sliders look good....steps give a bit more chunkyness (is that even a word?) and none...well...just means I won't get dirty trousers.
So realistically if I am at all worried about the undercarriage of the car then sliders is best, if I want to protect the doors at all then side door mouldings is the way to go and if I just want bling then I should go for either tubing or steps....Did I get that about right?

Almost. You can get rock sliders on their own, to protect the sills. I was thinking about getting Prospeed rock and tree sliders. As the tree slider part (the step if you like) can be removed, leaving just the rock sliders in place. Not a quick job though apparently as you have to actually remove the rock sliders to fit/remove the tree sliders.
I need another off roading trip to Wales to focus the mind

I'm not sure 'hacked' is the word, but they do need cutting. They are marked on the inside of the plastic sill so a straightforward job. I did mine with a multitool, only took about half an hour for both sides.

I'm afraid so. I think they're a fairly cheap replacement though, TLO will be able to give you a price.

Exactly the same as the genuine parts steps but at a fraction of the price. I turned them upside down and pretty much emptied a whole can of spray grease on all the seams, trim rivets, welds etc, then slapped some black waxoyl all over them before fitting. The original brackets were fine so I just left them on

if nothing else, fit steps, as if you then park the car raised into offroad mode, the steps save you getting dinks in car parks when the muppets at the side of you throw their doors open, they hit the steps rather than the car
