Bargain today at kwik fit. I think

Had 4 new Pirelli scorpion tyres for my disco 3. All balanced and fitted.
Also front and rear wheel alignment. £580 all in. Is that good?

Yes, I was ripped off to the tune of over £250 for one by Lookers.

It failed its MOT with a huge hole gashed the side of the tyre. I guess SWBMO must have been parking in Waitrose again.

They were quite happy for me to remove the wheel, take it away, acquire and have fitted a new tyre, refit to the car myself, and then they would retest it for a fee. Or, I could swallow the usurious cost, and let them do it, and the retest was free.

The lesson here is to get the MOT done at my local tried and trusted tyre specialist, Treadfirst in Saffron Walden, who I recommend wholeheartedly, rather than the seemingly attractive option of having it done at the main agent at same time as the car gets its annual service.

You were conned.

Speaking as an MOT tester, you are allowed a free retest for tyres if returned for retest before the end of the next working day following the initial test. Plenty of other items too qualify for a free retest if retested before the end of the next working day:

access panels
battery
bonnet
bootlid
brake pedal antislip
doors (including hinges, catches and pillars)
dropsides
electrical wiring
fuel filler cap
headlamp cleaning or levelling devices (that doesn’t need a headlamp aim check)
horn
lamps (excluding headlamp aim)
loading door
main beam ‘tell-tale’
mirrors
rear reflectors
registration plates
seatbelts (but not anchorages)
seatbelt load limiter
seatbelt pre-tensioner
seats
sharp edges or projections
steering wheel
tailboard
tailgate
trailer electrical sockets
towbars (excluding body around anchorage points)
tyre pressure monitoring system
vehicle identification number (VIN)
windscreen and glass
windscreen wipers
windscreen washers
wheels and tyres
