You need the fault codes read, could be EPB system related but could be something like the battery and/or alternator on the way out 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Its just a pain getting it to our local independent, am I playing with fire by just leaving it and seeing how it goes?

Mine stopped doing this when I changed the battery. It used to show "special programs off" while cranking from bone cold.. which disappeared a fraction of a second later just as the engine took over from the starter motor. No effects on the car, special programs still worked too. Occasionally it would flash the amber EPB light a couple of times too after driving off. My dealer didn't tell me about any faults stored (unfortunately I didn't have my own fault code reading equipment back then). Presumably he didn't find any but there's a possibility he just cleared them all indiscriminately.
Is your battery the original? It's well past it's due date if it is.Dennis

Thats exactly what mine is doing. No idea about the battery, only had the car a few months. There is no other evidence of the battery struggling. .....

I had exactly the same symptoms but with 'Low Power' warning on the stereo screen.
I fitted a new AGM battery and have not had the symptoms since.
