I have had the same thing but only on a couple of instances, usually if I have started the FBH but not let it run for very long. I put it down to the car thinking it was warmer that it actually was and turning the glow plugs off.

My first guess is one or both of your EGR valves. Get them blanked; don't replace them on a 2006MY.
Recommend getting your fault codes read to confirm. Could also be multiple failed glow plugs if the situation improves when the car gets warm.

I agree with Steve you could also try waiting a few more seconds after glow plugs go out before you start or turn off then on again to allow them to heat up again, it might make a diffrence. Good luck

@zig
use SEARCH on the forum for EGR
there's a ton of information about these Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves.
Happy reading Chris

I have these exact same symptoms, EGRs blanked off 1 year ago. (But it did this before blanking them off)
When its cold around minus 5 ish and goes worse when minus 10 to 20, car starts but runs really lumpy, like its running on 3 cylinders, give some throttle and just no response, engine just ticks over at 650 rpm but rough, so much the car actually shakes!!
I can put my foot to the floor on the throttle and nothing happens, let it run sometimes for two to three minutes and then all of a sudden tickover goes to normal around 900 to 1000rpm, give throttle and everything responds as normal. No error messages nothing, apart from when its ticking over really lumpy the battery light flickers as its obviously not charging correctly when running at 650rpm.
The car then drives normally, no problems at all.
I am wondering if some of the glow plugs are either not working or not getting as hot as they should do, my car is an 05 and has done around 95k. Full land rover service history, its always been to dealer and had all the updates, recalls.
Anyone any ideas as it is a little worrying that in the two to three minutes it runs so rough that maybe it is causing damage or unecessary wear to something.

daveh,
Are you using a remote FBH timer? The symptoms you mention match the FBH timer usage perfectly. The ECU uses coolant temperature to determine fueling requirements for the engine (rather than oil temperature). When using an FBH timer while the car is parked, the FBH heats the coolant but the combustion chamber is still bone cold. So the ECU thinks engine is warm while the engine is actually cold. Therefore ECU does not supply the right amount of fuel to the cylinder on startup. Once the combustion chamber heats up appreciably (those 2-3 minutes you mention), things get back within range and all is fine. Dennis

oilyrs69,
Have you had your fault codes read?
Have you had your glow plugs checked by a garage who knows how to do this?
Suggest doing the above and reporting back.
It's not going to fix itself. You have a number of reputable independent LR specialists in your area. I'm sure other forum members in your area would be prepared to make recommendations if you asked.

I have a 07 se with 79k on clock,
EGRs blanked last year, but had a couple of reluctant start ups on v cold mornings then ticked over lumpy.
Yesterday at -3 it wouldn't start at all, had lots of white smoke (so getting fuel) , rang my local indy they said t sounded like glow plugs and to give the air intake pipe a squirt of "easy start" , bingo! started straight away,
they said this confirms glow plug problems so booked in for Friday.,
Ps they did warn me that replacing the plugs on a D3 can be a pain as they can get seized in!!
