Traveling on ferry with no EPB

Bit of an odd one here. I live in the Orkney Islands and am venturing to the mainland tomorrow for meetings etc and to get my D3 seen to (120k service and bushes replaced) at Strathearn Engineering in Perth.

However, my EPB failed yesterday (short period of squeeling from NS disk followed by grinding noise) Shocked which has left me with no shoes on the NS (the spring clips had failed). I have pulled the fuse to prevent the EPB from trying to engage. Strathearn are going to fix this when I get there but will it be ok to park on the ferry and leave it in gear (I have a manual) or should I get it lashed to the deck and the wheels chocked? Confused

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

I have seen that one too although it's not from Shetland. I think it's a cruise ship in the bay of Biscay!

The old Macbraynes vessel "Iona" was designed for those weather conditions. The bar was so far down below waterline it had sloping sides. It was at the point the rest of the vessel was pivoting around. Calm in the worst storm!

We had the Iona here a few years ago after it was renamed the Pentalina B. It now works out of Cape Verde!

Without a functional EPB I would get the vehicle lashed down and the wheels chocked.

I would speak to the loading officer and and advise them of your problem and say that you want the vehicle lashed down and chocked. This may well effect where they position the vehicle on the vehicle deck.

The Shipping Forecast for sea area Fair Isle issued at 1625 UTC Mon 28 Jan is not very good (although the direction of the wind is probably in your favour).

Wind: South or southeast, becoming cyclonic 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 at first, then southeast 6 to gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later.

Sea State: High or very high, becoming very rough.

16hours from Holyhead to dun laoghaire in ridiculous weather saw a lorry come on the deck after all the vehicles with extra lashings before we crossed. Everything below deck was strapped down although IIRC 2 tractor units made contact as their cabs had so much movement and parked so close the paint was scraped from one onto another. Very few passengers only saw their dinner once for that crossing and it was by far the worst in 25years of crossing the irish sea i have seen it. Even my folks (mums dad was ex merchant navy so often out to sea with him) said the captain should have called it off and not been so stupid as no-one else waited to cross Sad

Pity the old seacats have all but vanished now Sad they used to smooth it out with speed!

I often find that they've chocked my LR anyway (D3 or D2) when I return to the lower deck after the voyage. Not sure if they do it to other makes of 4x4 or if they've just had some bad experiences over the years!

I wouldn't be saying to any loading officer about your problem, there's every chance they wouldn't let you on as you have no primary brake.
Ferry company's are forever refusing to ship dropped trailers due to an air leak, get on low range 1st gear and throw a choke under the back wheel. Thumbs Up

There are 2 chocks in the toolkit, stick them on a wheel and remember to remove them when driving away.

That is completely irresponsible - it is and should always remain the loading officers' decision as the consequences could endanger the lives of all those onboard. 3 tons of metal repeatedly crashing against the ships loading doors could cause significant damage and a ferry with its loading door open would go straight down (remember the Herald of Free Enterprise). They have the equipment and the knowledge of how to safely lash the car down and dependent on the weather conditions it should be the ship's officers decision to make on the spot and no-one else's. My opinion is based on 8 years as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy followed by 20 years in shipping industry shore based.
