Fuel gauge showing wrong level + bonnet won't open

I had my Discovery TDV6 HSE Auto for almost 2 weeks. Bought it second hand with only 2K miles on the clock. It has been to the local dealer to have a water leaking from sunroof, and the electric fault in radio aerial fixed.

Yesterday, when I pulled out of a B road onto a highway, the engine suddently stalled (which should not be as it is an auto). Managed to glide to the side with one wheel on the highway. Anyway, cut the long story short, there was no fuel left in the tank but the gauge was still showing a 1/4 left. Went to the petrol station and fill the tank with about 84 ltrs of fuel. That confirmed our suspicion. Have anyon of you guys experienced this problem?

Anyway, one problem solved and the other emerges. My bonnet cannot be opened from the lever. The metal wire (the one like the bicycle brake wire) is very loose. Talking to the dealer, there is no way I can do to open it unless you access from underneath the car, and that's a dealer's job. Again, anyone with this experience?

Overall, I liked the car. My previous car was a BMW 530D Touring. Although the handling is not as great as my ex-BMW around the corner, but considering the size of Discovery, I think it was pretty good. Only if the small nigglings could go away Sad

Not had a problem with either of those issues although my infotainment system freezes every so often - its due a visit to the dealers anyway. Disconcerting stalling out of a junction and potentially dangerous. Are you finding your dealers helpful?

Zekor,
Not had that problem, but shortly after getting mine and seeing how far a tank would get, once the gauge got below 1/4 it dropped quite remarkably. Fortunately I had the message centre showing 'distance left' only just made it to garage!
Since then I have had not similar problem on running low below 1/4 full. Strange???

Hi, What was your aerial problem?
My radio reception is lousy. They may or may not have checked it. No way of knowing.

Dom,

I am using WestOver in Christchurch for the repair and warranty. So far, they are quite good. I went there on Friday and they booked me in on the next Monday with a loaner (Discover 3 also). However, my car is due in on 13-Jun again to fix the other 2 problems. I heard that Land Rover in Yeovil is better. But it is too far away from me. Have you had any unpleasant experience with WestOver in Christchurch? Do you use other loca garages?

mattlynch,

The strange thing is that the 'distance left' is showing about 130 miles. I think there is a problem where the fuel left information is gather. It confused both the computer and the gauge.

BCP,

My problem with the aerial is that I could only pick up national radio stations such as BBC2. And that was only possible through manual tuning. Seeking does not work at all. And there is no way I can get any good receptions for local radio stations. At the end, there was a problem in the aerial link to the radio. There is nothing wrong with the aerial nor the stereo. My advise is that explain this to your local dealer. It should not be to difficult to see the problem. And hopefully, the fault is like mine, easy to fix.

The weather was beautiful down in Dorset. I cruised my Disco3 through New Forest from Southampton as there was a long queue around the join of M27 and A31. I love the car and both of my daughters love it too. The car is describde by my elder daughter as a tracker. What can I say Very Happy

Many thanks. My radio was looked at at the same time as the steering was being sorted. I was initially told it had been pulled out and the aerial wiring traced and tightened up. When I called back they knew nothing about the radio and said someone would look at it. Return call assured me that it had been tuned and was much better.
I seem to get Radio 2 very well but everything else breaks up. Disco2 and current Subaru are unaffected hence not geographical problem.
Perhaps LR thinks we only listen to Radio2.
Steering started making horrible noise on left turns this pm, can't believe I've got another problem in a 4 week old vehicle. It is the time involved in these sagas that really p****s me off.
What's the going rate out there for constant warranty claims? Free services or extra off-road training - I'd welcome your views.

Yeah Yeovil are my local dealers where I bought my D3, I haven't had cause to test them out on anything major so far they seem OK.

BCP,

Funny you should mention the noise when turning left, I have also experienced this noise but not just when turning left, also when turning right. A few tests revealed that this only happens when the vehicle is in the access mode. I suspect because the car is actually sitting lower, the tyres may touch the plastic wheel arches. I told my dealer and I do not know if they have done anything with it.

Here is what I do now. Try to avoid a full lock in either left or right when in the access mode, or raise your car to the normal mode before fully locking your steering wheel. This seems to work and I have not heard anything since following these steps.

Can't life be simpler with Disco3 Sad

Well Westover in Christchurch told me that I was the first person to complain about the knocking noise when I went in to see them on Wednesday last week.

I have had a few problems with this dealership and their customer relations manager is trying to improve matters. Letters have not worked so I marched in there on wednesday to confront them.

My car is also booked in for a week fron 13 June.

My manual seat keeps sinking down.

I have asked why the AUX connector mentioned in the manusl is not fitted to the 7 seat base model.

I have now been told that cruise control cannot be fitted to my D3 and that it is only available when ordering. This is different information to what was given to me by the very young lad who sold me the veichle.

I have two small paint blemishes that need attention.

I also camplained about lack of customer service and failed promises to ring with follow up calls.

Kevin, thanks, I thought I was going mad, but my manual seat seems to slowly go down. I think it's when I get out of the car, I catch the lever, so every time the seat lowers slightly. I had reverted to counting the number of pulls (11) from lowest setting. After a couple of days the seat had gone down 2 to 3 pulls /pushes.

This is a really old post !
My D3's fuel gauge is totally out after 1/4 tank ever since I got her. I use odo and fill up around 550 Kim's.
Not a good idea to run tank too low I believe.

Anyhow after all these years maybe someone has found out what the problem is I've never seen the low fuel warning lamp come on either even when I once ran really low and put in almost 80lt's !

Suppose it's a "Landy thing"

I guess my guage on my D3 "works" & shows 1/2 full when the tank is half full
...when it goes to low the light comes on & the Sat Nav shows fuel symbols....
I have taken my D3 to the last gasp just a few weeks after I bought it....since than I carry 10 litres of derv at all times
