I've got a Midland Alan 42 handheld that I bought recently. Performs really well and being portable is a big bonus. I paid £108 for it from these guys : Just found it cheaper - link updated
Good range, easy operation and it comes with normal battery pack, extended rechargeable pack ( Still uses AA batteries just recharchables obviously ) also comes with a handy adapter for the power socket in the car so you can use it on the cars power. Well made, not bad quality but works really well. I got it to augment the Midland Alan car mounted set in the G4. Works really well for off-roading both for the spotter and if in a convoy.
Hope this helpsMy17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

This is the antenna I have - works really well. Had a clear conversation with my mate when we were on opposite sides of the Thames a few weeks back. I was in Lakeside and he was about a mile away from the Dartford crossing.
Uncle Ray RLD on here is does a brilliant mount for the antenna too. Give him a PM he'll look after you and provide a superb product My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

You're welcome. You can get a good quality car mounted system for around the £60 mark but then there's the antenna and mounting costs to consider plus you don't have the portability advantage. Cons though are battery life and the range be as great although I've not had a problem personally. Hope it all helps

Those springer aeriels are ok, but for the best at a reasonable price, get a Sirio aeriel.
I have two, one on a mag mount and the other on a RLD mount onthe d3 rail.
Both excellent to SWR and great transmit/receive distance.Bodsys Brake Bible

I may well have an as new Midland 42 with all the accessories (case, battery packs, leads, stub antenna etc, etc) in the box and a large mag mount and mini-springer - so a complete kit.
Will dig it out at the weekend and post a price/picture if interested.

Another vote for Uncle Ray's mount that bolts to the roof rail.
Sirio performer antenna - you can easily unbolt it when you don't need it and just leave the base up there. Handy if someone else drives the Disco and isn't impressed by a big radio mast!
I bought a handheld radio (Intek H520 plus) second-hand for about half the new price. Comes with car kit to connect power, and I added a remote mic. If money was no object I'd permanently install one of those Albrecht radios with the remote mountable front.
Soldering on the plug takes some care, and check with a SWR meter so you don't fry the radio if it's shorted.
