Paul, If you are running windows on a Mac via bootcamp then you are actually running windows in native mode (directly on the hardware with no emulation layer). All bootcamp does is provide the windows drivers for the mac hardware and provide thesis hooks for the initial boot stage of windows.
The Intel Macs are essentially PCs now but rely on EFI (Extensible Firmware interface) rather than BIOS for the initial boot stages. In the past it has been said (by Microsoft I believe) that a MacBook is one of the best platforms to run windows (V7 IIRC).
Don't let the comments about frequent software updates initially dissuade you from purchasing the Nanocom, it really is an excellent piece of kit with good support. From experience, the Nanocom firmware
updater is a reliable piece of software which is very easy to use.
Chris, as a side issue do you have plans to port the Vehicle Explorer software to OSX as well or does the way it hooks into I.E. put this into the 'too difficult' category?

Thanks Fifth, your response helps somewhat
I have no doubts that the Nanocom is a first rate product, after all I have placed an order.
Its not, so much the fact that there will be frequent S/W updates (that can be a good thing, as it shows the manufacturer is committed to developing a better product), my worry is the support if things go wrong, I wouldn't have a clue, and the potential of having an expensive diagnostic tool 'bricked' or an issue with flashing the latest firmware release, with no support from BBS is too much a risk.
As you correctly point out, I have a Macbook running Windows Vista using Bootcamp, you say this is in fact running windows natively, so if BBS would support this set up, Im back to being a happy chap
Chris, Karpouzih
Would you support this set up, until you release natively for MAC??

Hi Paul,
There are indeed going to quite a few updates for the Nanocom. This will,
especially now we have just released a major upgrade, be a frequent and
ongoing process as we debug and increase the functionality of the device.
Even much further down the line we will be adding various modules and
increasing vehicle model coverage, which again will require upgrading.
Allow me to clarify my comment on not supporting the VM for Mac. If your
VM software runs as it should, then there should be no issue, it is after
all meant to be a Virtual Machine. If however the Mac drivers or VM
compilers or what-nots do not properly function, then that's something we
can't help with. Unfortunately if it is not our equipment or software we
cannot under any circumstances support it and, as a company, cant
officially help or support in the setup of VM's or Mac's. It is not our
area of expertise. We can't debug the VM code, much in the same way if
somebody's PC has a faulty USB drivers, we don't support that.
Now we would try to help as much as we could, and there are lots of kind
and helpful people with the knowledge to chime in, like Fifth Horseman,
but at this stage we do not officially support Mac or VM's.

We will support and ensure our software and hardware runs and functions in
the environment for which it was intended and developed. If you manage to
artificially create this environment on your Mac, or your microwave for
that matter, and the environment runs as it should, then we will resolve
any issue that arises from our software and/or hardware. As Colin
mentioned, down the line we plan to create a new compiler for Mac's, and
as I mentioned, we don't have a timeframe yet.

You misunderstood, if for some reason your Nanocom did get bricked we
would of course offer the exact same support as everyone else. It is not
the case that if you use a Mac we will ignore you But if you do use a
Mac, and have problems with your MAC and its software, we are not able to
gurantee to help you with that part.
Thanks
Chris

Beanie:
Flack and Geoff do actually have a point in respect of the neatness aspect of the nanocom Evolution.
Initially, as anyone can see from reading this thread from the beginning, we started adding coverage of the CAN BUS vehicles to the Nanocom Evolution in the usual model by model, system by system and function by function fashion, like any other diagnostic system.
And although the Nanocom Evolution hardware might already offer many of it's own advantages, sitting very well placed between PC based and normal stand alone equipment, I ultimately decided that if we were going to do this, that we should really be more innovative and provide usabilty and functionality in a way that no one has ever seen before and so create a product that was not only inexpensive to purchase but was also increadibly self intelligent, neat and utter childs play to use
This radically new approach has caused endless unforseen problems and delays that frankly we really do not deserve, and as you all see we really are working extra hard to polish it and debug the last few items.
But make absolutely no mistake folks, we are not trying to debug and polish up some rusty can here, we really are trying to polish something that will absolutely be the new king of vehicle diagnostic systems bar none for a very long time to come
This system is not so much about what it does but how well and neatly it does it
Paul:
Please try to appreciate that karpouzih is very much a newbie on this forum, and is only just dipping his toe into what seems like very shark infested waters to him, as a representative of BBS.
Given my workload i would have thought everyone would appreciate having an additional BBS representative around to help out.
In respect of your concerns:
Of course BBS never leaves anyone behind or unsupported under absolutely any circumstances.
Considering that it is is almost impossible for anyone to actually Brick an Evolution as there are additional safeguards and methods we have built in that can be implimented in even the worst case situations, if you did somehow manage to do this then we would happily sort you out and cover all costs
And for anyone who may later feel that we somehow deceived them in any way, and have true grounds for being unhappy with what we provide, i will happily refund them completely.
You have to appreciate that althought the Nanocom Evolution may well seem new to you and many D3 forum members, we have now supplied literally thousands of these over the last few years with almost universal praise and apreciation, and i am pretty sure that a very good number of these have indeed upgraded them using MAC's.
Everyone else:
For the second week in a row, me and my staff gave up our Saturdays today.
Our efforts moved things forward significantly in respect of debugging and adding functionality to the software and which our Beta Testers now have avaliable to them.
Frankly we have hit just about every problem we could have and then some, and can only but apologize for the delays, but one way or another we are totally committed to getting there.
Colin, I know they do, I just don't want Geoff ringing me AGAIN to mention that he has one already and how good it is and will be
I know it will a fantastic piece of kit hence in bought one on day one and offered to be a beta tester to try and get my hands on one earlier had that suited your needs Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Ok not had much time today to have a real good play with it plugged into a D3/4 so my apologies for that
But one of my jobs as a beta tester it to check on its durability and must say its a tough little sod my only concern is screen protection unlike like the MSV2 it's not got a slide able screen protector for me with spanners and bits flying about could be a problem, for the normal user I dont think this would be ,
So what I did is cut a piece of ally that covers the screen then added sticky 10mm Velcro tape to secure it to the unit and hey presto I,m happy screen protected when not in use
Pictures later
Ps Paul as for bricking the unit I think that would very very hard indeed there's is a set routine to connect it up to your D3/4 but I've tried and tested it all sorts of ways and it's been ok opposes sorry Colin had to try it you know what I,m like
Had a play with Genesis this afternoon first impressions are very good, its plain and simple to use, fast and what i do like about it is the way you can toggle from LR to Ford numbers, a nice neat interface for the hard to trace assembly and part numbers.
Down loads and the file system that the Nanocom uses are seamless from Genesis to flashing them on the car, this is a good point for the home user as it keeps things simple and no clutter..
It just gets better the more you use it, once you have been through the menu's a couple of times it becomes second nature to use them, this of course will not change when the software is upgraded, as it kind of holds your hand while you use it which is a very good design feature for the Home user and can only help in having confidence in the unit.
More testing tomorrow..
