Wow. Those figures from Gary are interesting ...
Original price £51,220. Forum members reporting in another forum post that they are getting approx 8% discount from dealers on a D4, so approx £4,100 off.
Price = £47,120.
Private sale value at 9 months = £46,735.
So depreciation over 9 months of ownership is a minute £385 !!
I just wish I had the capital for the initial investment ... or have I missed something? Chris

Yes, thats true for Steve's car.
I was carefully avoiding making a comment on his car.
My comment was just based upon the figures from Gary. Chris

It's not quite that simple fella. In the advert you will notice that the list price was in fact around £59k with all the extra options that are on the car. (I just checked the original order form for this figure). So the depreciation is actually £10-12K, not £385!Also, I'm sure people are still getting discounts but it is traditionally harder to do so around this time of year as prices do firm up in the winter months. To be fair, the trade in offer from the dealer books at anythin from £41-46K for this particular spec/mileage/age of vehicle. So there is still some deficit there. In my experience, if you have the money to put into the car in the first place AND have a good relationship with the dealer, then it is possible to change the regularly and thereby protect the majority of your money. It can be a tricky balance to achieve but not impossible My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

No problem Steve. My comments weren't about your car, just about the book prices from Gary.
Personally, I think your car is a bargain with all those extras !!
Best of luck with the sale. Chris

She loves the colour of the mini and will hopefully save on fuel for doing the school run.
Had to stay on the drive today as had a fair amount of snow.
The D4 is a good price at £45,500 and would love to swap mine for it but I've already bought 2 cars this year so need to slow down

I'm interested in the motivation for changing cars every six months, at a cost to change over the 12 months of £10-12k (w/o the additional costs of selling the car). If this is a regular occurrence then this is a lot of money being spend on depreciation - after 5 years you would have spent the equivalent of a new car.
I suppose that the equivalent in cost terms would be leasing a car - but lease deals don't often come in 6 months terms.
My '05 Discovery probably loses £3k a year in depreciation, or £250 a month. I would really feel the pain at losing 4 times that much to drive (in my view, essentially the same car).
Perhaps it's possible to avoid the servicing costs by changing so regularly...? Previous cars

Apologies to Steve as we have strayed off topic here ... Steve is trying to sell his car on this post ... but we don't know what regular discount Steve can get on new cars at his dealer (that is private to him). A good initial discount may make it very financially viable for him personally.
If you take Gary's general figures for D4s, changing every 9 months makes complete sense ... see my post above. Chris

@ CKRA1000 Spot on on all counts fella I do get a very good discount from my dealer so it does make the regular change a viable proposition.

Also, WD makes a good point. This way, I do not pay for servicing or tyres and my brother usually avoids having to pay road tax at £400+ PA so these factors also help in minimising the cost to change.

Best,

Steve, I think you are being somewhat misleading in what you have said in that it is not only "dealer discount" you are making use of or we would all be doing it "UNDERSTEER" ---is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" -is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" ------------is how far you take the fence with you.
