Tappet type of noise from my TDV6 |
|
Folks,
I don't recall the loan D3's that I trialed having this; just wanted to see if there was any advice out there.
If I get the car to a constant 25MPH, Auto-gearbox in D, engine at about 1900 RPM - it sounds really clattery; suddenly no doubt whatever that this is a diesel engine.
This same noise is apparent but at differing volumes from around 1800 to 2400 RPM, at times with a slight harmonic echo/vibration kind of sound accompanying it.
Strangely, opening the window doesn't make the noise any louder so it appears like it's coming through the bulkhead.
Anyone any idea if this is normal?
Whether it is normal or not, is there anything I could do to quieten it down other than turning up the stereo? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

Initially I would fuel it with an enhanced cetane fuel such as BP's Ultimate.[Be very very careful its a diesel pump].
Also explore the effect of load; if it alters under load it's not tappets and very likely to be combustion related. The better cetane fuel will explore that area to an extent. Also cold air will induce detonation, so see if its weather effected.
I have to say my new 07MY disco is considerably noisier at idle than the 05MY was, but not really different under load

I have a MY07 Similar noise around the same revs as you describe when not much load on. I noticed it more when running in as I was delibertly keeping the revs down and not loading the engine. Since then I have used the revs a bit more and notice it less. It seems to disappear under load. Have mainly been using supermarket fuel. I also wonder if the "Winter Fuel" has any effect.

Winter fuel is roughly 5% additives (including petrol) + 95% diesel. It does affect fuel economy and the combustion process is not so efficient or controlled

Thanks everyone for your advice, sounds like it's normal which is great as it's set my mind at ease!
The sound does indeed change (diminish) under load, so I'll assume it's fuel related rather than mechanical.
I'll have a go at some BP Ultimate (Don't worry, I've read the threads, I know I need BP Ultimate and not BP Ultimate ) and see if that changes it ; I hadn't thought about the winter fuel and cold temperatures and these could indeed be the difference from my test drives in late summer.
You're all stars! Dr. Ian Malcolm:

stapldm,
Your test drives were therefore in the 06MY vehicle and not a 07MY.
To achieve the Euro4 certification I am convinced they altered some things and low load noise seems a loser. As your noise is load effected its definitely not tappets so rest easy and enjoy.

Same issue with my car (manual)...
When accelarating it sometimes sounds like a helicopter flying over or a tractor passing by. I have tried several diesel brands - no difference.
Starts to become annoying...
Would it be useful to try to record it and post the sound somewhere on the Internet?

I have had this exact issue since new on my Aug MY06 SE, I've always used BP Ultimate and the noise still exists 9,000 miles later.
I check the oil weekly and the stealer has re applied the enhancement but still the clackety sound remains.
I guess it must be due a service soon so I'll have them look at this again, sort out my bloody moving drivers seat and when brave enough bend my wiper blades as a change of rubber has had little effect.
Mind you owning a Mercedes ML for 5 years these issues are bliss in comparison...

ouch! Hope BP or the insurance company will pay for it to be put right.
Never been to BP for fuel do they have a BP Ultimate in Diesel and Unleaded then? 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

Thanks again Ocsid, it's certainly not affecting my permagrin .
If it starts to grate, I may try and work out how the noise is getting into the cabin and perhaps if space allows try and add extra noise insulation. Like I said earlier, it appears to come direct through to the cabin as opening the windows doesn't affect the volume - could that ignition sound really be transmitted through the engine mounts or is it more likely to be coming from a resonating exhaust pipe?
Hoops, I've been checking my oil weekly and so far apart from at 500 miles (suddenly at the 3/4 mark), the oil has remained at the top, so like your experience this doesn't appear connected. Good luck at your service
Oncdov, an interesting idea recording it; I'll see what I can come up with...might indeed help to share with other members, some of whom I believe are engine experts.
Thanks again folks, excellent advice. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

staplm,
Detonation noise is very harsh, a metallic pinging, so travels well through a solid metal route. I am not a specialist in acoustics nor do I know the sound damping characteristics of the engine mounts or even the type used but I feel they would well isolate the detonation noise frequencies. I doubt it’s airborne from the exhaust.
Just thinking about it there might be a solid sound route via the gearbox up the selector to the cabin; assuming the selector is mechanically and not totally electronically connected to the box; I don’t even know that for sure.
If it is, get you passenger to lay a heavy quilted coat, [something with an impervious surface like a wax sodden Barbour would be as good an item as I think you will find] temporarily over the selector and see if that helps. Not that it will yield a solution it might help us understand what is happening.
Detonation occurs when the fuel enters the cylinder before the air is at a high enough temperature for the fuel to ignite [and burn gracefully as it should]; when the air is hot enough the already present fuel mist explodes with violent results. Its very difficult to avoid at all times when trying to keep the injection as advanced as possible for economy etc. Fuel with a higher cetane number helps hence the generally better “refinement†found with these enhanced fuels. [BP Ultimate and fuel with Millers Diesel Sport 4 for example]
I have not noticed it under load myself only at idle, but I always run with Millers additive.

Went to the dealer today - They drove my car for a short while and confirmed the engine sounded 'a bit different'.
I managed to have an appointment with LR Belgium tomorrow for further investigation/diagnostics.

Ocsid, that's a useful rundown, many thanks. Your theory is somewhat borne out by the fact that today when running at -2C ambient, there was no hint of the sound at all. My fuel so far has been supermarket, and my local BP doesn't provide Ultimate so I may see if adding Millers provides a magic pill - if so then I guess there's nothing more to be done other than try and find high cetane providers.
Oncdov, as it now turns out that my 'noise' can disappear, we may not be experiencing the same thing; but in any case I'd certainly like to hear if the dealer finds anything - good luck! Dr. Ian Malcolm:
