Inner rack

On my mot advisory I got 'n/s inner rack loose', this was a couple of months ago, so I'm now thinking of doing something about it. Is this the steering rack? If so how hard to change, as I'm doing both front hubs this weekend, apparently no rain!

Your problem will most definitely be the inner track rod ends.

The previous post should be 'n/s inner rack end has movement'. Is this still the track rod? I ask because the n/s track rod was replaced at the time.

the track rod is the item in the picture
a track rod "end" is the ball joint that connects to the hub carrier next to the wheel
if you had something replaced then let me have the part number and we can eliminate that

Don't the track rods in the picture have a ball joint on the end? The inner end I mean. There is a ball thing filled with grease on the ones I have. Same part numbers as you quoted.

Whats the difference between a track rod and a tie rod or are they the same?

my interpretation of tie rod is the little link bar with a ball joint each end which attaches to the ARB and into the upper suspension arm

Well, according to Wikipedia, tie rods and track rods are the same thing:

"In automobiles, the tie rods are part of the steering mechanism. They differ from the archetypical tie rod by both pushing and pulling (operating in both tension and compression). In the UK, these items are generally referred to as track rods." Mr. Green

I believe the link TLO is talking about is commonly called a "drop link" though LR's official terminology is "Stabilizer Bar Links"

I think you will find Nick (TLO) is referring to the parts in the picture which Indeed are totally a different thing to a tie rod / drop link.

But tbh as nick will vouch, I got a bit confused as to the propper terminology of the inner track end/rod as mine are going to be replaced next week by my Indy, and after seeing them in the flesh they are the ones in Nicks picture.

Apparently mine are f.....d
