bad starting this morning
help please i have a 2.7tdv6 disco 3 and this morning when very frosty would not start, it turned over fine for ages and plenty of power in the battery, my friend told me to spray some back to black in the air intake and try again, it started straight away and has been fine all day, please help as i have been told to test the heater plugs but have no idea what he means and also have read that they are a nightmere to change, please give me your thoughts before maindealer robs me before christmas,

Yes I would get your glowplugs checked and expect a £2000 bill if you need them changing!2014 D4 XS

really, any better ideas please thats more than the cars worth?? is there any way of checking them easily please as they carnt of all gone can they?

You can measure how much current they are drawing when they are on, although I'm not sure how much they are supposed to draw.
Trouble is, they are so thin that they snap as soon as you try to remove them, snapping them involves removing the heads to get them out, removing the heads means taking the body off.
I had this last year, 4 of 6 had failed and those 4 snapped upon trying to remove, so they body was removed, heads were removed and 6 plugs were fitted at a cost of £1900ish.2014 D4 XS

Would it be sensible for all of us to lubricate around the glow plugs from time to time inn the hope they won't seize in?

Possibly, not sure what with though as the plug works by using the threads in to the head as the -ve conductor, so is any lubricant going to become an insulator? and would the flakes in copper slip jam the threads up?
If it is the glow plugs, rather than risk snapping them to replace them ,it's cheaper and far easier to fit a remote system to the FBH, whenever I run mine for 30 mins morning or night, the glow plug light does not even light and the car starts up fine.

It didn't work for me!
The glowplugs heat the combustion chamber to very high temperatures in order to aid the burning process, the FBH controller heats the coolant around the engine and makes no difference to the combustion chambers at all.
I initially thought I would get away with using my FBH controller instead of having glowplugs, but it doesn't sort the issue at al
edit: if anything, it probably makes it worse as the glowplug controller thinks the engine is up to temperature when it's not, and therefore doesn't run the plugs for as long!2014 D4 XS

Two of the glowplugs are difficult to remove. Provided you don't break all the others, chances are, changing the faulty ones that are accessible will get starting back to normal - at least with normal winter temperatures.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Didn't someone else have this problem a year or two ago. The plugs were soaked in lubricant for a few days before being removed, I'm sure it was successful, have a good search first and it's got to be worth trying before diving straight in.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

It's worth a search, I seem to remember that a particular penetrating lubricant was suggested.
