D3 just died on the motor way (engine fault) |
|
Hi,
Just pulled onto the motorway and got up to about 60 then the lost power ( beep then engine fault message apeared with special programs off)
Pulled over and re started pulled off fine then the same thing happened, I think the engine was still running but it slowed down about 30 then had no choice but to bump it on to the verge before it stopped completely.
Managed to limp it the 1 mile home.
any ideas?

Just went out in it again.
Started fine
drove fine until I got to about 60 then it went to limp home mode again.I didnt switch the engine off just stopped and left running , pulled off again and its back to normal with plenty power until it gets to about 60 ish.
Doenst seem to have a lack of power until it hits 60 so cant see it being the turbo

As DM says could well (hopefully) be fuel filter.
Get fault codes read..could be fuel pump, but eliminate the inexpensive fixes first!

Did you get an ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT message? If so I'd day turbo. If not I'd say fuel filter. To be sure you need your tea leaves read.
PS Just reread the OP, if I had to be I'd say turbo. Sorrrreeeeee.
PPS Change your filter first and make sure it's a LR one, not some "equivalent quality" POS.

Yes ENGINE SYSTEMS FAULT message.
But it has plenty power on pick up as long as its below 60.

It works both ways
ESF for both turbo and fuel pressure issues
Could even be a split turbo hose My D3 Build Thread
TDV8 Retrofit Build Thread

Power below 60, now that is confusing. Get yer fault codes read is the best route forwards otherwise we're all stabbing in the dark.

I bow to superior knowledge!! Was just going by my experience of shutting down issues. Was getting ESF before turbo changed, shutting down with little throttle input and ESF message. Post turbo change was still getting shutting down but no ESF but at much higher throttle input, fixed with change of fuel filter. MAP sensor also changed that helped. Way too complicated for me but it was the way it panned out.
Luckily not happened since (18 months) so fingers crossed.

Did you have poor throttle responce at low revs?
Because mine still "shoots off like the clappers" from stand still!

Poor throttle response at low revs? Not quite, the car completely died on me many times including in very dangerous conditions on the motorway. I got to the stage i could do it on demand and the car was virtually undriveable, SWMBO refused to drive it for about 8 months ISTR as the car was truly
f g dangerous. It would just bong and die and god help you if you were in lane 3 or 4 passing loads of trucks on the M25. I got quite good at rolling shut downs & restarts, most interesting in traffic but safer than hitting the hazard light switch and trying to get to the hard shoulder through solid lines of artics.
Took 8 or 9 months to fix, had I known it woud be that long I'd have chopped her in a heartbeat. Luckily all now fixed and good few other issues to keep life interesting. It's part of the LR experience.

She drove perfectly normally before the bong and ESF errors.
