Odd effects after 105k / 7 Year Service |

Hi All,
The D3 had its 105k / 7 year service a couple of weeks ago, in this time I have clocked up around 250 miles.
Since the service has been done I have noticed a number of things which where not there before the service.
When accelerating there is a kind of tapping / whining noise, almost like the kind you get when some cars reverse quickly, although it's subtle. If the window is open you can't hear it over all the other noises. The noise is only noticeable when accelerating, when going a constant speed it is not as noticeable but when going down hill it disappears.
A couple of time since the service I have noticed a slight surging of the engine but this was even more noticeable when coming home tonight, I was doing around 30 mph and the rev counter was fluctuating +/- 250rpm and the vehicle was speeding up / slowing down to suit, extra throttle resulted in the same. This cleared within a couple of minutes, although during this time the throttle response did seem a little different to normal.
One thing that did occur a couple of days after the service was the report of low coolant, on returning to the dealer they topped this up and reported that they had checked the vehicle over and couldn't see any leaks. On checking the vehicle yesterday, I noticed that the coolant has gone about 2 inches below the 'cold' line again as it did when the message was displayed after the service.
I can't help but think that all the above may be related to the service, but on the other hand it may just be a coincidence!
What are everyone's thoughts?
Incidentally, I am taking a trip out to an independent tomorrow morning to have a quote for some work (ARB, rear pads / discs etc) that the dealer wanted £2,000 for so I’ll mention my woes to them at the same time / see if they can read the fault codes take their views.

We had some of these problems also.
The surging and the smell of coolant.
They do spill some of the coolant when doing the belts.
And you can smell it when the engine is hotting up also
in the beginning.
We went back and they checked it out, dragged the head mechanic
out in the reception area spanner in hand stating the car was fine
and the EGR's needed replacing. (Which were blanked...)
Anyways, they did do something as it was fixed afterwards
so have it checked out by your indy and he may have an answer
for you as to what the issue is.
We're none the wiser, but they did do something to remedy it.

Hi Hess - thanks for your reply.
Another thing that I've also noticed since the service is a drop in mpg thinking about it. Previously I've been getting an average of around 25mpg according to the Road Trip app, this reduced to 22 mpg on the last fill up. The onboard computer is now showing an average of 21 mpg since the fill up.
Thought that it may be due to the slightly cooler weather, but I'm not convinced!

Think we had that on ours also.
I thought it could be that things had to settle in a bit.
With the belts and the pulleys etc.
Whether that is the case, I don't know. It was just a guess.
I'm sure some of our more knowledgeable members could
have an answer for that.

More likely that the battery has been disconnected, and its lost your long term average consumption, it will build back up again in time.
They might also have reset the gearbox adaptive memory, which may account for the different driving sensation whilst it rebuilds its adaptive memory to your driving style.
Not sure about the whining though, maybe the new belts need to bed down a bit?

Had the same problems as you after mine was done, all sorted its self out after 1000 miles. Runs perfect now.

If your loosing coolant then your whining noise might be just that the front auxiliary belt when it gets wet does whine so you need to check that there is nothing leaking from the hoses that they would have to remove to do the belts.
Did they renew the auxiliary belt tensioner if not it could be the source of your whine ..
As for the surging check they have fully tightened the inter cooler hose and the air filter hose across the top of the radiator is fully pushed down on to the plastic hose on the coolant bottle side at the front.
