Newbie Torque converter question |
|
Hi everyone,
I am just over a week into owning my first D3, and really rather enjoying it! I have a 2004 TDV6 HSE with 76k on it.
The D2 is sat at work, all unloved and slowly sinking at the back end as all the air falls out the rear bags!
I have read a lot of the TC/gearbox posts, and am slightly worried that mine might not be quite perfect.
On a warm engine, if I accelerate lightly, I get a blip out of the reve counter, before the gradually speeds up. Similarly, if I am driving at a constant speed and take my foot off the fun pedal, the revs drop. In both cases this is only about 200 - 250 rpm. Is this normal?
Sorry if it's a daft question, but I've not driven an automatic for about a million years and they were clunky things back then! If it is beginning to go, I'm considering taking out a warranty with Warranty Direct and then trying to break it once the 90 day 'fair wear and tear' clause has expired
Any advice most welcome
On a separate note, is there anyone in Doncaster with a Faultmate that would be interested in making some adjustments / software upgrades to my Disco as time goes on?
Regards,
MWH

The blip of the rev counter when you first start to accelerate (if I've read your post properly) might be a cause for concern. Mine certainly doesn't do that.

I think its ok, so long as it doesn't continue to 'blip' up and down under constant gentle acceleration, or start to send judders through the car.

Got the same symptoms as you manwithhobbits, had it for last 15k miles and gearbox double flush worked briefly then back to normal. Also a droning noise from gearbox in all gears except 6th. Gearbox is also using oil but no sign of a leak. Waiting til something more definitive to go, then get the dealer to fix.

Given the age, it could be that the water coolant is leaking into the ATF. Before you have any work done, have the ATF checked for contamination. No point in spending money for short term fix. If it is water contamination and you catch it early enough, fit new ATF cooler, replace ATF (megaflush) and try Dr Tranny Anti shudder at £10 a tube. You may find its then all ok and no need for TC replacement and gearbox rebuild. Wait and cost may increase. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Can "normal" LR dealers test for coolant in the ATF or is it a specialist job?

Good advice. The ATF contamination check is easy - my local indy checked mine (and found it to be completely fine) when they rebuilt my torque converter.

Mines in at the moment getting the torque convertor done hoping warrenty company is going to pay out as garage are on with them as we speak, mine had the blips in the rev counter in most gears and through acceleration it felt like I was running over a cattle grid for a few seconds, was advised not to bother with a mega flush from a indie garage due to it could cause more damage ie get the cr@p that has built up in the box and dislodge it etc, so took it to a auto transmission place and they have it stripped down as we speak, will keep you updated re warrenty and other faults found. Which is exactly what happened with mine. The full flushing did nothing other than dislodge every bit of crud in the system, so it drove a lot worse than before. A rebuild of the torque converter wasn't cheap, but has fully cured the car, which is running better than ever, so much so that I'm not going to change it, as I'd originally planned. Partly that's because I've sunk a good few pounds into repairs/maintenance (suspension arms, alternator, torque converter, brakes etc) to ensure that it's perfect, but mostly because it's just great to drive now.
I'm currently in the Alps, and was booting it up some really steep roads and tracks yesterday - previously the rev counter would have been more like a semaphore arm given all the waving under hard-load uphill acceleration, but no longer.

Thanks all,
I think I will follow the advice given - get my friendly local indy to test the fluid, and take it from there.
Ebygum32 - Is yours covered by a Warranty Direct type of warranty? I'd be very interested in hearing how you got on with getting the costs paid if so.
The rest of the car is in such good condition that I think I owe it to the car to get it fixed once, and fixed properly. It still puts a big grin on my face whenever I drive it! I just wish it did a few more miles to the gallon - barely getting 26mpg, but I'll be investigating that next - I know it could be MAF sensors or EPB grabbing or a million other things- I'll just work my way through the list!
Many thanks for all the replies so far!

Yep covered by warranty Direct, they have just agreed to the claim after a week, they had to send it to the underwriters as the claim was over £2000 well £3036 to be specific but took it to Martin lowe Transmissions in Barnsley and they are spot on, one of the best transmission companies in the buisness and one of the most helpful, there service is second to none
They are replacing the TC and other bits I will give you more info when i get the D3 back early next week Goodyear Duratracs

Fantastic result
I'm going to get mine in there when the time comes I think!
Saw your PM Chris, but not allowed to reply (this is just my second post - even though I seem to be spending my entire working life on here reading other people's stories and tips!)

Well got her back gave it a run up the M1 auto/manual sport modes all seems fine, nice and smooth,
They were explaining about a mega flush and that it is not really worth it as there is a couple of litres of ATF in the torque convertor that you cannot flush out and the flush does dislodge any gunk that is laying around. They also checked my ATF for glycol and it was clear so hopefully happy gearbox and good few miles without any issues.
I asked them about the Dr tranny stuff that members have been on about they just said it is masking a problem and should get it looked at.
Would I recommend them yes I would there website let's you know about them and even just a quick chat over the phone with them puts you at ease and gives you confidence in there knowledge. I dealt with Adrian but spoke to different people too and they were all very helpfull. Martin Lowe Transmissions in Barnsley Goodyear Duratracs
