Burning Rubber

Noticed this before but ignored it Embarassed , but just returned from a very short trip and the smell (blike burning rubber) is there and quite obvious. Seems to be coming from the mid-section of the car (outside and underneath). Have had a look underneath as best I can and much to the amusement of my colleagues, had a good sniff around the engine bay, but cant see anything.

Had no error messages or warnings - so all fine there and no loss of performance, braking, or such. Might be something I've driven through and is vapourising off the hot engine / exhaust elements, but thought it worthy of a general query in technical under anything I should check?

Thanks in advance.

Funny you should say that mine smelt the same on Saturday morning. I was a shooting and a bit late so I put my wellies on to drive in. At first I thought it was the rubber strip round the foot of the boot (I have the heater up quite high Embarassed ) but I realised it was outside not inside. I have definately not run any scuba divers over!

A bit of mud on the exhaust can make an interesting pong, especially if it has some organic deposits in it Wink

Any chance one of Tesco's finest carrier bags has melted onto your exhausts?

Transgenic tomato anyone?

Does it smell like warm rubber as opposed to burning rubber? Sporadically I have had a smell of warm, slightly rank rubber emanating from the inside, and I put it down to : a/my wellies in the back; b/ the dogs (don't know why they should smell like warm rubber, but it's always useful to blame them); c:/ the dogs sitting on the wellies. (so b applies accordingly).
Possibly it's none of these, but as it didn't occur when I got the car, and is occurring since : a:/the introduction of the dogs in the rear and b:/ the deposit of the smelly wellies also in the rear, I presume there is a coincidence. The X5 I had before also had this sporadic rubbery aroma. I think it gets worse when either a:/ the heating is full on after a slog across the swamplands near the River Dee in another deluge, or b:/ during a warm summer's day when the dogs and wellies are reaching are certain temperature. And before anyone asks.....no, not me. Hopefully.
