Ive got the same prob with a sticky steering wheel. I've been giving it a whipe with flash bathroom whipes which seams to work for a bit as it takes off the grease on the surface of the wheel.
As my disco is off the road for a few days whilst I wait for a new alternator. I'm going to try and clean the wheel with some leather cleaner that I've got for my sofa Rich

Cleaned mine with cloudy ammonia then liquid shoe polish.
Polished up and has been good since.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Well now there is a decent cover.
Smooth Napa with Perforated Leather..... ideal for your tacky or basic wheel.
You just stitch it in yourself [or get a trimmer to do it for you]
I see that this cover is now sold. Where can I get one? CheersFreelander SE 2005 Auto.

Sticky steering wheel
I had this on my D3, tried leather polishes and cleaners but still sticky. Eventually spent one hour with paper kitchen wipes and bottle methylated spirits. It's now better than when it was new.

Treat yourselves to a new soft napa leather one, you wan't regret it, costly but best mod without a doubt I've done and if you stretch to heated . I have read many times how good people's say they are, I now believe them, totally transform the vehicle. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
