A small amount of 2so in the fuel assists in lubricating the fuel system and allows the diesel to burn more efficiently, smoother running, less smoke - though its a disputed point
I cant remember the exact proportions but I used to add 250ml for every full tank - has to be JASO FB spec. as a minimum, JASO FC preferred if you can get it

@Adam, I'd put money on the millers being 2-ethylhexyl nitrate, it's an addative you can buy in bulk, last I bought was about £80 for 20L Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Ok so I guess its a try and see situation, to be fair i normally buy Shell V-Power Diesel, and run RedEx Diesel through it once a month, but at this point my LR3 has been relaxing since its Tour De Turkey run in the summer, Its a Sit on the Driveway 5 days a week and Gets a run on the weekends,
But for a bit of interesting background info, I used to have a Mk4 Golf GT-TDi 1.9, I got very inventive with making my own fuels to run it, 50% Diesel and 50% Cooking Oil, Depending on where i was working from, I'd get it for free used and filtered, Or New Fresh and un-used for £10 for a 25LTR from a cheff guy i knew, the car never had issues, starting it 1st time took 2 cranks, but when it was hot it was straight on,
it was funny in traffic jams in London in the Summer as depending what the old oil was used for would determine what the exhaust smelt like, fish n chips to ginger sponge cakes, you would see people looking about wondering where the fish n chips smell was coming from in the middle lane of the M1 when at a a standstill,
Hey UtilityGuy, I think you might not realise that the LR3 is a NA market vehicle (petrol V6 and V8s exclusively I gather) and since the engines only use petrol (or gas to quote our American friends) it might be unwise to use two stroke oil as an additive in those engines.
Having said that my father had an associate that used to put a cup of his own sump oil in his petrol engined cars here in Australia and swore by the benefits.
I never tried it but have tried the so-called '2SO' (mineral type only) and can happily report that I could not detect one iota of difference in either fuel consumption, smoke output or engine noise... Your mileage may vary (as the Yanks are prone to say!)

Beanie, do you use the 2-ethylhexyl nitrate, and if so have you noticed any difference in noise, performance etc.
May try some to see the effect in a my V70.

Because you used the term 'LR3' my mind automatically thought "Ah, LR3= petrol engines" hence my confusion... <g>LeighW
The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Does this really work? I've found 2 stroke mineral oil at wilkinsons for around £3 per litre, so may be worth trying.... But I don't want to damage my car anymore

New member so sorry for.dragging up an old post, I don't use supermarket fuels as they are crap,I normally run my cars on she'll normal diesel but sometimes put the shell plus in just for.a.treat. Will adding the two stroke oil still.make a difference if I'm using the shell diesel which has the correct additives in. Thx

also note that on a hot day it can expand enough to leak out if you've been foolish enough to put it in rear storage tub above scissor jack ... doesn't quite stand upright in there so with hindsight I suppose a leak was inevitable. dissolved it's own label plus the disposable gloves I'd stored with it. thankfully, the plastic the storage is made of is tougher stuff.
took a couple of days of having to drive with windows open to clear it.

for clarity, it's the Millers stuff that reeks..

I look after my engines and have seen the guts of many an engine but I do use supermarket fuel.
No really, do you think supermarkets have their own refineries or oil wells?
