Fantastic place.......we did it in the D2 in '04.
Just need to get back there......
My son has just come back from a looong desert trip n his Puma,with a mate who has a Patrol.The Patrol is still in Cooper Peedy with both upper spring mounts torn out of the chassis. 
No probs with the Puma

People say that a Land Rover will take you to the desert a Japanese 4x4 will take you back.
Looks like the opposite occurred here 
Land Rover, superior in all technical situations off road, and in this particular case, reliability too
