Surely the safety brake cable is there to protect trailer and other road users in the event of a trailer being detached from towing vehicle? What ever the towing vehicle.

The saftey brake cable is there to do as you say, but if you are towing at 60mph and the towbar comes off the chances are that the caravan will flip over, and the safety brake dont work when the van is on its side

Ahh you must be a gambler DG and prepared to take a risk. In my past professional life as a Mechanical Engineer those odds are unacceptable, well in Nuclear Submarines anyway

i'll copy this to Freel2 as the one with removable towbars have had a lot of issues with them clunking
might be a different type though

The odds might be unacceptable but the potential risks between a nuclear submarine and an out of control caravan are slightly different !!!

I'm comforted in the knowledge that come the next world war, we can always deploy the deadly caravans on an invading army

Just out of interest (and perhaps a little off topic), where do people put the caravans' break away cable when hitched? I have no real alternative but to loop it around the towbar, as it's not long enough to attach anywhere else as the cable must be looped back on itself rather than clipped (Al-Ko). I have looked at a longer one, but the clip was too big to pass through the holes at the side of the towbar mount.

I use the recovery loop inbetween the electric sockets. It should not go round the ball as it may jump off if caravan comes off, must be secured to somthing on the car/tow bar MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I tried that but it's pulled very tight when attached and the brake is off. It can be looped around the towball if there isn't anywhere else convenient (according to Al-Ko, Caravan Club, C&CC etc.) although I do appreciate the minute potential that the cable might come off too however unlikely. It's worse clipping it to something rather than looping it as the clips are likely to pull off the cable should the caravan become detached, and not operate the brakes.
I'm more concerned that should the towball drop out, of course everything attached will go with it and not operate the brakes.

I just wasted a perfectly good mouthful of dinner, and startled two kids with that comment.

With a shackle on the loop and the breakaway cable attached to the shackle there's more than enough length in mine, it's fine

Was yours an ex HA vehicle? If so, has the tow hitch been used to remove stranded Lorries, buses etc?
Due to H&S rules, HATO are very well practiced in the art of towing and cant even change a wheel for a stranded maiden, they just have to look on whilst she attempts it herself.
