Tyre tread depth differences
Hello all
Just trying to find out whether or not different tyre tread depths can damage drive chain or diffs.
A friend of a friend just had to buy a new diff for a Nissan pathfinder and was told that it was damaged due to slightly different tread depths or tyres. Saying that because of the difference in tyre diameter due to different tread depths that one wheel would travel faster than the other(front or rear sets) putting strain on the drive chain. If this is the case say u had a puncture on one of your wheels which was unrepairable and the other tyre on the front had 6mm of tread left when u replace the punctured tyre and put a new tyre on which had 11mm of tread on, this could cause damage. So u would have to replace both tyres.
Seems costly to have to do that. But if it is true would be cheaper to do this than buy a new diff.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I doubt it would harm a disco as any transmission wind up would be relieved by the diffs, axle and gearbox. There may be other views on this though? I had a Evo X which had limited slip diffs all round and so it was recomended all 4 tyres had to be replaced together. Disco diffs only lock up when needed e.g. slipping around on mud snow etc.
I'm interested t see what the consensus is. Just picked up 4 mud tires for my old 1980 Series III, two new, two well worn - but still better than what's on there now!
The worn ones were chucked in free; I was worried about wind up if I stick them on. (BTW its a Stage 1 V8 with full time 4x4 through a LT95).

haldex on audi no like
early volvo (viscous)4x4 required tyre rotation to equal wear and issues when people put on a new spare after puncture
lr no problem (unless one is really small car may not allow past 3rd gear. flat tyre safety)
lt95 no probs ran 101for thousands of miles with huge tread difference. only issue is often have to reverse to exit diff lockIt is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.
