do they cover caravans over 8m. I know a lot only cover caravans 7m or under in length because they dont have the recovery facilities to repatriate them - I know the AA dont cover large twin axles and I thought he RAC were the same?
I need to organise something for September when we take ours to the Alps.. Duncan

If RAC is any good they are doing UK + European cover for 1/3 of the standard prices though Clubcard Vouchers.

Duncan, you are 100% correct
Just read the small print on my policy and it clearly states "caravans must not be more than 7m inc tow bar" . It's a pity they don't make that clear when you book on-line I will be excercising my right to cancel within 14 days when I ring them after finishing posting this. Can't recommend The Caravan Club's Red Pennant Highly enough.
I was rushed into hospital in Spain 2 days after we arrived and it was nearly a month until I was fit enough to be flown home.
My wife had great communication and support from then on an almost daily basis they then arranged for someone to drive our outfit home for us when we abandoned it on the site in Spain
Pricey but as they say you don't know how good they until your knee deep in the S***

Russell,
we have the caravan insured with Caravan Guard. this cover also covers the caravan abroad and they will tow the caravan off the mway and repatriate it for anything that means the caravan isnt towable, as part of the normal caravan insurance. They wont cover it if the car breaks down, as the caravan is still towable. however, checked with LRA and they will recover the caravan also if the car breaks down and there is no limit on the lenght of the caravan with LRA (just spoke to them 2 mins ago) Duncan

what I always find odd is that the RAC wont cover a 'van over 7mtrs, but if you join via the Caravan Club, they will - it must be the same recovery trucks being used.

same with the AA - but LRA have no limit !! even though they use the AA . AA said its because they need specialist recovery trucks cos of the length - ie HGV recovery truck Duncan

As Al says RAC will cover the car and caravan over 7 meters if joined through the Camping and Caravan Club but will not cover caravans over 7 meters if booked just through RAC.
Have just spoken to Tesco's about the club card deal and yes they will do cover for Europe but it DOES NOT cover caravans only the car. Lady was very helpful and read out the terms and conditions word for word over the phone.
I know the car is covered via LRA but after looking at some of the incidents on the way through France last year and talking to lots of people who had had issues with new vans on the way through France last year I want to ensure we have everything covered.
Seems to be a toss up between Red pennat and RAC at present. Red pennat is expensive for a one off trip, RAC have just offered another £40 off to bring it down to 179 for 12 months European cover. MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

who have you insured your caravan with - not the breakdown cover, but the NORMAL insurance ?
CaravanGuard cover the breakdown element abroad as part of the normal cover... so I dont have to buy anything extra.. Duncan

Know this is a bit late for this thread, but be aware that most of the breakdown cover only covers caravans up to 7 metres!! Sadly I've become a small print reader since I'd been wandering around with AA cover that actually wouldn't have been any good had I broken down with c/van. Will tell you who I use when I can find the paperwork. Currently still sunning ourselves for another week on Lake Annecy.

Holy Thread Resurrection!! ADAC or Pennant or OTHER?!?! |
|
Guys,
I leave on 22nd July for 2 weeks in Brittany with the tin tent.
Can anyone please advise on recovery services for the car and/or caravan?
I'm covered travel insurance wise with Amex but need breakdown cover so Red Pennant seem pricey at £155 for one trip.
Heard good things about ADAC as long as you can find a way to get joined up (seems some offices will sign you up and others not due to dispute with AA)
Any other ideas on good value but good cover? Keen to ensure that we can get to destination, either with hire car or van taken there for us - if worst happened to the D3
That said I'd probably bite the bullet and just hire something and notch it to bad luck if that happened (if I could hire something with a tow bar and capable of pulling a twin!) MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)
