Hi All.
After reading various threads on this problem....
I cleaned the microswitch....which clicked but didn't work (open the tailgate)
Pressed both dash buttons, which again clicked near rear mechanism but did not open tailgate.
Ordered the actuator cable....spent 2 hours trying to get the old one out...only to find it was not broken.
I'd broken it by this time (cut through to open rear), replaced nearly everything, shut to test and now it won't open again........
What do you guys reckon the actual issue is....the actuator??
Cheers,
Adam

Just had to replace the cable on mine at the weekend, had a real nightmare trying to get my hand in to get to the cable. Also replaced the handle after reading all of the threads on here, £25 from Duckworths, excellent service. My advice would be if you haven't done the cable yet fit an emergency release to make life easy or befriend a dwarf who can get there hand in easy

Hi - been lurking on the site for a while - have found information invaluable today in opening our tailgate !!
Removing bottom carpet trim easy peasy without damaging it too much.
Reaching in and grabbing boot release cable absolutely awful with big fat hands - couldn't push the black plastic cover far enough out of the way to reach in with a long nose pliers.
Borrowed wife's hand who managed to grab the cable with a long pair of dental pliers and eventually popped open the top tail gate.
Eventually realised that the L shape nipple at the end of the cable had broke but managed to make temp fix with a small allen key filed down attached to the cable with a electrical block terminal - works a treat !!! (similar block connector currently bodging throttle cable on our old series 3 together - perhaps Land Rover should enclose a strip in the glove box for such emergencies ?)
Found the whole process very difficult and fiddly but managed to get there in the end.
No major damage to the trim apart from a few broken trim fasteners .
Thanks everyone for the help in this forum ! - relieved and self satisfied !

Mine bust about a month ago and have been putting it off - someone told me on Friday I had a brake light blown so guess what - couldn't get to the bulb without getting stuck in with the spanners !! glad it's over and done with just need to order new cable and it will be a job well done.

Can't get into boot!
Hi, I cannot access my boot unless I leave the keys (ignition on) in. I've tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours to reset, I've tried re-programming the remote but nothing works. When I take the keys out there is no sound from the mechanism but when I put the keys in the ignition and turn the ignition on, it works perfectly.
HELP!!!! Any suggestions very very welcome!!
Cheers

Tail gate microswitch replaced - remote locking problem
Thanks to all for information about rectifying my upper tail-gate problem. Having bought a new handle complete from Duckworths the tailgate now works a treat and I am hoping this will now prevent the battery from discharging. Unfortunately, I am now having trouble locking the car with either of the remotes. Just wondering if I need to reset something?
Has anyone had this experience and knowledge of a fix?
Advice much appreciated.

Mine went into the Indy today, very nasty corrosion inside the rubber surround..........new complete handle (including the rear camera blanking plate 8) )......4 torx and some trim pulling and 15 minutes later all was well in D3 land....there was no resetting or Autologic required....probably the easiest plug'n'play I've seen on the D3... 8)"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Tailgate broken lock mechanism CHEAP FIX with photos explain
Same thing happened to my D3. Pressing the buttons on the dash didn't work.I did manage to eventually prise the back off the door cover off, you do need small hands that don't feel pain , and do apply a bit of force to prising out those panals, they don't break, the technique to opening the tailgate is as mentioned in previous threads, you just have to get you hand right inside with a small pair of plyers and pull the snapped off bit of cable until it realeases the tailgate lock. I thought that maybe I should run my own repair instead of buying a replacement cable which will probably break again. Trialled this repair for a few weeks and no problems so far so thought I would share with you guys. I basically used a small length of copper earthing wire out of some 2.5mm twin earth house electrical cable. Just wound it through the holes in the plastic cable holder, then wound around the cable a few turns and hey presto. I also tied some strong string around the cable so that if this problem happens again I have a piece of hidden string which I can pull and it will release the tailgate lock , making the job easier and saving to have to prise off the door panals again. Tooks some photos so hopefuly these will load up into my gallery. Have a look and god luck. Any questions just pm me.Now: 2006 4.4 V8 HSE BRC LPG Cairns Blue 15mpg

Mines just gone this morning. Actuator sounds when you pull the handle or press the buttons on the dash but nothing so snapped cable / connector booked in to let the dealers scrape their knuckles on Monday. Warranty job. Club N.E.R.D's

Another top tailgate failed here today, pretty certain it'll be the switch after jet washing it all off yesterday as I can open it with the two button method.
Rang the warranty company so will prob get new colour coded handle fitted seeing as I have the opportunity

Did the DIY fix a couple of weeks ago - thanks for the advice - saved a lot of time & messing about! I intended ordering a new cable, now thinking of leaving it alone as everything seems ok. Any thoughts?
Richard.

Another one to add to the list, my 56 plate S yesterday. On holiday, miles from anywhere, three child seats across the middle, and loads of gear with us. Hrmphhh.
Thanks for all the help in the other threads, but one more question - is this common also in D4s or was it improved?
