Smoking after idling for a while

Hi can anyone help. I'm really happy with my car but when I get caught in traffic and sit ticking over for a while the car smokes like a pig until I get going again. Took it to a local garage who said the number 6 injector was being lazy and 1&2 were over fueling to compensate. He said he would do some research and get back to me. I've heard nothing. Has anyone had this and is the fix a new injector. ???

Is it white smoke f so it could be your egr's leaking coolant .. you need to bypass the egr's to see if this stops it smoking as anything injector related is going to be expensive ..

I don't think its coolant as it smells like unburnt fuel

Ok you need to get your cylinder balance checked out with a diagnostic kit, this should give you an idea of which cylinder's are out and tie up with your local garage's report..if thats the case.

Hi flack. I mentioned in my first post about the injectors having an issue with being out of balance is this the same as your talking about? I have lots of smooth power and the car sounds lovely. It only smokes when it's been ticking over for a short while.

Hi Trig,

I'm having the identical problem on mine, smokes after being stationary for over 30-60seconds and smells like fuel or oil being burnt if I get out. Other than that drives smooth as a new.

Whilst people have fixed symptoms such as this nobody can give you a definitive diagnosis without looking at the live data.

The diagnosis you have is incomplete and although it is likely to be an injector it is not the only cause. Most of us would need proof of the injector's guilt before replacing it as the things are just far too expensive.

Injector balance limits are between 960 and 1.4 k, with the higher figure providing more fuel. If you take your car to a good indy he will conduct a fuel spill check (Timed Flow Rate 1 minute idle Min rate 10 ml - Max rate 25 ml; 4 minute idle Min rate 15 ml - Max rate 26 ml). Even if outside of the limits I would only discard an injector if was significantly outside of the flow rates given by the other injectors - especially in hot weather as this will skew the results.

Sorry that I cannot be more definitive but with more data it is hard to know. Given the price of the suspect parts this is an issue well-worth taking to an indie.

Hi, had the same problem on mine. Was driving fine most of the time but would smoke and smell of unburnt fuel when left ticking over. I did also had a judder at motorway speeds if you came off and then went back on the accelerator. Mine was number 6 injector. Expensive to replace but has cured the problem. Have done 20k since with no issues. Hope this helps.

It would be nice to be able to try replacing my number 6 injector to see if that fixed it instead of going through all the diagnostics that the garages like to do and charge you for. I can see me throwing loads of money at this and not curing it.
